What is a kitchen helper?

As a kitchen helper, you perform a variety of duties in a restaurant, cafe, or large commercial kitchen. You use food service skills to assist chefs, wait staff, and restaurant managers with a variety of tasks to keep the kitchen functioning smoothly and safely. Although there are no formal qualifications required for this career, you typically have some form of previous restaurant work experience, such as dishwashing or bussing tables. You do not interact directly with customers, although your job may be near customer areas. Kitchen helpers must be detail oriented and capable of multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment.

What are some common challenges faced by kitchen helpers and how can they be managed?

Kitchen helpers often work in fast-paced, high-pressure environments where multitasking and efficiency are crucial. Common challenges include standing for long periods, managing time effectively during busy service hours, and maintaining cleanliness while juggling multiple tasks. To manage these challenges, it's important to wear comfortable, non-slip footwear, stay organized by following a prep list, and communicate clearly with team members to coordinate tasks smoothly. Adhering to kitchen safety and hygiene protocols also helps minimize stress and ensures a productive workflow.

What is the difference between Kitchen Helper vs Dishwasher?

While both roles support kitchen operations, a Kitchen Helper assists with a variety of tasks including food prep and cleaning, whereas a Dishwasher focuses primarily on cleaning dishes and kitchenware. Both positions are entry-level and essential for maintaining efficient kitchen workflows.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a kitchen helper, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Kitchen Helper, you need basic food preparation skills, knowledge of kitchen sanitation standards, and the physical stamina to handle standing for long periods. Familiarity with commercial kitchen equipment and safe food handling certifications, such as a food handler's permit, are often required. Strong teamwork, time management, and a positive attitude help you excel in a fast-paced and collaborative kitchen environment. These skills are important to maintain safety, efficiency, and high-quality food service in any culinary operation.

Is a kitchen helper a stressful job?

A kitchen helper role can be physically demanding and requires working in a fast-paced environment, which may contribute to stress. However, it generally involves routine tasks like cleaning, prepping, and assisting chefs, and stress levels depend on the workplace and workload. Good organizational skills and teamwork can help manage job-related stress.

Job description

Kitchen Manager — Longfellow Hotel
Twinflower Café & The 5 of Clubs

The Longfellow Hotel is seeking a passionate, creative, and driven Kitchen Manager to lead our dynamic, dual-concept culinary program. This is a unique opportunity to shape and elevate two distinct dining experiences under one roof—each with its own energy, purpose, and guest experience.

About the Concept

By day, Twinflower Café is rooted in nourishment—focusing on whole foods, thoughtful sourcing, and balanced, nutrient-rich plates that support overall wellness.

By night, the space transforms into The 5 of Clubs, where we embrace indulgence—offering elevated, flavor-forward dishes that highlight local ingredients and bring a sense of occasion to every service.

About the Role

No Hot Line Grind! Be Creative! The kitchen at The Longfellow Hotel is built for speed and efficiency. The concept is prep based with ease of dish execution to be quick and easy. We run both menus out of a Rational iCombi oven and a Blodget.

As Kitchen Manager, you will oversee daily kitchen operations while helping define and evolve both concepts. You will have the creative freedom to develop new menu items, contribute ideas, and collaborate closely with our Food & Beverage Manager, bar program, and other hotel outlets. This role includes a mix of leadership responsibilities, with time spent both on administrative duties and working hands-on shifts in the kitchen.

As a valued member of our team, you will be eligible for the various benefits:

  • Discounted Hotel Stays Across New England through NEIRA
  • Discounted Hotel Stays throughout the world at SLH properties
  • Individual Coverage for Health, Dental & Vision
  • Unlimited PTO Policy
  • Discounted meals at our food & beverage outlets Twinflower Cafe and Five of Clubs
  • Discounted spa services at Astraea Spa
  • Parental Leave
  • Bereavement Leave
  • Access to career development and advancement courses
  • Voluntary enrolment in Uncommon Hospitality IRA plan matching up to 3% contributions

What You’ll Do

  • Lead and inspire the kitchen team across both day and evening services
  • Execute and maintain high standards of food quality, consistency, and presentation
  • Collaborate on menu development for Twinflower Café and The 5 of Clubs
  • Source and highlight local, seasonal ingredients
  • Manage ordering, inventory, and cost controls
  • Ensure compliance with all food safety and sanitation standards
  • Support hotel-wide collaboration with events, bar, and F&B leadership
  • Oversee service for approximately 50 covers nightly, plus occasional small events (10–25 guests)

What We’re Looking For

  • A strong culinary leader with experience in both high-quality casual and upscale dining
  • A passion for health-forward cuisine as well as refined, indulgent cooking
  • Creativity, flexibility, and enthusiasm for a dual-concept kitchen
  • Excellent organizational and team leadership skills
  • A commitment to fostering a positive, professional kitchen culture

Why Join Us?

At the Longfellow Hotel, you’ll be part of something distinctive—where thoughtful nourishment meets elevated dining, and where your creativity genuinely shapes the guest experience. This is an opportunity to grow, innovate, and lead in a kitchen that values both purpose and pleasure.

Pay Range: $65,000–$70,000 annually
