What does a kitchen cook do?

A kitchen cook is responsible for preparing, cooking, and presenting food according to recipes and restaurant standards. They handle various tasks such as chopping ingredients, monitoring food safety, maintaining cleanliness, and ensuring meals are served on time. Kitchen cooks may also assist in menu planning, inventory management, and training new staff. Their role is essential to creating a positive dining experience for customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a kitchen cook?

To thrive as a Kitchen Cook, you need strong culinary skills, knowledge of food safety standards, and often a high school diploma or culinary training. Familiarity with commercial kitchen equipment, POS systems, and food handling certifications (such as ServSafe) is typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and the ability to work efficiently under pressure are standout soft skills for this position. These skills ensure consistent food quality, safe kitchen operations, and smooth service in a fast-paced environment.

What are some typical challenges kitchen cooks face during busy service hours, and how can they be managed?

Kitchen cooks often encounter high-pressure situations during peak meal times, which can lead to stress and a fast-paced work environment. Managing these challenges involves strong organizational skills, effective communication with team members, and the ability to prioritize tasks quickly. Many kitchens rely on 'mise en place' (everything in its place) to ensure ingredients and tools are ready before service begins, helping cooks stay efficient and focused. Developing these habits not only improves performance but also builds resilience and teamwork in a professional kitchen.

Job description

Experienced Kitchen Cook

Location: Newburyport or Ipswich, MA
Schedule: Monday–Saturday
Position: Experienced Kitchen Cook

The Natural Grocer is looking for an experienced kitchen team member to join our scratch-made grab & go kitchen. We prepare healthy, delicious meals from scratch, with a menu that changes daily, so there’s always something new to create.

We’re looking for someone who enjoys being part of a close-knit team, takes pride in their work, and genuinely enjoys working with food and people. Some professional kitchen experience is required — this is not an entry-level position.

What You’ll Do

  • Prepare healthy meals, salads, soups, sides, and other grab & go foods from scratch.
  • Follow our recipes and food-preparation standards consistently.
  • Help with daily prep, cooking, plating, packaging, and kitchen organization.
  • Work closely with the kitchen team to keep daily production running smoothly.
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and food-safe kitchen.
  • Contribute ideas for new dishes and menu items.
  • Learn our systems and gradually take on more responsibility.

The Right Person

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has previous kitchen or cooking experience.
  • Enjoys cooking from scratch and working with fresh, wholesome ingredients.
  • Works well with others and enjoys being part of a collaborative team.
  • Is reliable, organized, and able to work efficiently in a busy kitchen.
  • Takes pride in quality and consistency.
  • Is flexible and excited by a menu that changes daily.
  • Enjoys being part of a local community.
  • Wants to learn, grow, and take on more responsibility over time.
  • Is willing to work at either our Newburyport or Ipswich location.

Grow With Us

We’re looking for someone who can contribute now but also sees a future with us. We want to invest in the right person and help them learn all aspects of our kitchen, develop their skills, and grow into greater responsibility and leadership over time.

Why Work With Us?

At The Natural Grocer, we believe work should be a joyful part of your life. We have a supportive team, a wonderful community, and a positive work environment. We’re open Monday–Saturday and closed every Sunday, giving our staff a consistent day to rest and recharge.

If you’re an experienced kitchen professional who loves good food, enjoys working with people, and wants to grow with a team, we’d love to hear from you.

How to Apply

Please send your resume and a brief description of your kitchen experience, including where you have worked, how long you’ve been working in kitchens, and the types of cooking or food preparation you’ve done.

Applicants without previous kitchen experience will not be considered.
