What is a kitchen associate?

Kitchen associates are team members who assist with food preparation, cooking, cleaning, and maintaining the overall organization of a kitchen. They typically work under the supervision of chefs or kitchen managers and help with tasks such as chopping ingredients, washing dishes, stocking supplies, and ensuring food safety standards are met. Kitchen associates play a vital role in keeping the kitchen running efficiently and supporting the culinary team in delivering quality meals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a kitchen associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Kitchen Associate, you need a solid understanding of food safety, basic cooking techniques, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with commercial kitchen equipment, food handling certifications, and inventory management systems is typically required. Strong teamwork, time management, and attention to detail are crucial soft skills that set candidates apart. These competencies ensure efficient kitchen operations, compliance with health standards, and consistently high-quality food preparation.

What are some typical challenges a kitchen associate faces during busy service periods, and how can they be managed?

During peak meal times, Kitchen Associates often face challenges such as high order volumes, tight deadlines, and maintaining quality standards under pressure. To manage these, it's important to stay organized, communicate clearly with team members, and prioritize tasks efficiently. Many kitchens operate with a strong sense of teamwork, so supporting colleagues and asking for help when needed can make a big difference. Developing good time management skills and staying calm under pressure are essential for success in this role.

Job description

MKE Cabinetry — Kitchen & Bath Designer (Sales & Design)

Company Profile

MKE Cabinetry manufactures handcrafted custom cabinetry—kitchens, vanities, basements, floating shelves, and custom millwork—built and finished in our Butler, WI shop. Rooted in Milwaukee craftsmanship, we build what we sell rather than relying on mass production or catalog limits. We serve DIY homeowners, interior designers, builders, and contractors across Delafield, Milwaukee, Brookfield, Elm Grove, Wauwatosa, and surrounding areas.

We are proud of our work and are searching for talented people that would build up our team!

Role Overview

  • Position: Kitchen and Bath Designer (Sales & Design)
  • Location: Butler, WI (Shop & Showroom) + Greater Milwaukee client/job site visits
  • Work Structure: Full-time, Hybrid (On-site showroom/shop, field visits, and WFH flexibility)
  • Schedule: Mon–Fri (occasional evening/weekend appointments to fit client schedules)
  • Compensation: Base salary + commission on projects sold

Key Responsibilities

  • Design & Space Planning: Meet with homeowners, designers, and contractors online and/or onsite in our showroom. Produce functional, aesthetically pleasing, and buildable custom layouts using cabinetry software.
  • Full-Cycle Sales & Quoting: Qualify leads, guide clients through material/finish options, prepare accurate quotes, present design solutions, address objections, and close sales.
  • Account & Referral Management: Service existing trade partners (builders, remodelers, interior designers) and build long-term relationships to drive repeat business and referrals.
  • Lead Organization: Maintain accurate CRM and project records with real-time updates on client interactions, design revisions, and quote statuses.

Qualifications & Requirements

Required Experience & Skills

  • 3+ years of residential kitchen and bath design experience, or closely related remodeling sales.
  • Software Proficiency: Hands-on experience with cabinet design software (2020 Design, Chief Architect, Cabinet Vision, SketchUp, or similar) plus standard office/CRM tools.
  • Technical Cabinet Knowledge: Solid understanding of cabinet construction methods, door styles, finishes, pricing mechanics, and reading construction plans.
  • Measurement & Travel: Proven field-measuring accuracy and attention to detail. Valid driver's license for travel within the greater Milwaukee area.

Preferred Experience & Skills

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design, Industrial Design, Architecture, or a related field.
  • NKBA Certification (AKBD, CKBD) or equivalent industry credentials.
  • Pre-existing relationships with Milwaukee-area builders, remodelers, or interior designers.
  • Direct experience selling custom or semi-custom cabinetry builds.

Benefits & Core Values

  • Base salary plus commission.
  • Paid Time Off (PTO) and paid holidays.
  • 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Continuing education and industry certification support.
  • Direct access to our on-site manufacturing shop to show clients standard and custom construction methods firsthand.

How to Apply

  • Apply through Indeed with your resume, or send me an email directly (zabdi@mkecabinetry.com). Candidates are strongly encouraged to include a portfolio of completed kitchen and bath designs.
