Position Summary

The Kitchen Assistant supports the daily food service operations of a men's shelter by assisting with meal preparation, serving meals, maintaining kitchen cleanliness, and ensuring food safety standards are followed. This position plays an important role in providing nutritious meals in a respectful and welcoming environment for shelter residents. Duties typically include food preparation, meal service, dishwashing, inventory assistance, and maintaining a clean and organized kitchen.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist with the preparation and serving of breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner for shelter residents.
  • Prepare ingredients by washing, chopping, slicing, and portioning food items.
  • Set up serving stations and distribute meals in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Wash dishes, utensils, pots, pans, and kitchen equipment.
  • Clean and sanitize kitchen work areas, dining areas, refrigerators, freezers, and storage spaces.
  • Follow all food safety, sanitation, and health department regulations.
  • Receive, organize, label, and properly store food deliveries and donations.
  • Monitor inventory levels and notify supervisors when supplies need replenishing.
  • Assist with stocking shelves and rotating food items using FIFO (First In, First Out) procedures.
  • Remove trash and recycling and maintain cleanliness throughout the facility.
  • Work collaboratively with shelter staff, volunteers, and residents while maintaining a positive and respectful environment.
