What is a kennel tech?

Kennel Techs, short for Kennel Technicians, are responsible for the daily care and well-being of animals housed in kennels, veterinary clinics, animal shelters, or boarding facilities. Their duties typically include feeding, cleaning enclosures, exercising animals, monitoring their health, and providing basic grooming. Kennel Techs play a vital role in maintaining a safe, clean, and comfortable environment for animals and often assist veterinarians or other staff with animal care tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a kennel tech, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Kennel Tech, you need basic animal care knowledge, attention to detail, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with cleaning and sanitation tools, animal handling equipment, and sometimes pet management software is beneficial. Compassion, reliability, and effective communication with staff and pet owners are standout soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure the safety, well-being, and comfort of animals while maintaining a clean and organized kennel environment.

What are some common challenges faced by kennel techs, and how are they typically addressed?

Kennel Technicians often encounter challenges such as managing multiple animals with different temperaments, maintaining cleanliness and sanitation standards, and handling unexpected situations like medical emergencies. These challenges are typically addressed through thorough training in animal handling and safety protocols, teamwork, and clear communication with veterinary staff and supervisors. Many facilities also provide ongoing support and encourage Kennel Techs to participate in professional development to improve their skills and confidence on the job.

It can be a good entry-level position for those interested in animal care, but it often offers limited advancement without additional training or certifications. Job satisfaction depends on personal interest in working with animals and the work environment.

What qualifications do you need to be a kennel tech?

Kennel technicians typically need a high school diploma or equivalent and should have experience with animals and knowledge of basic pet care. Do you love working with dogs and cats? Want to be part of a trusted team that makes pets feel safe, loved, and at home?

We’re looking for a Full-Time Kennel Technician (internally called a Pet Pro) to join our team and care for our furry guests at their home away from home.

Who We Are

NVA Pet Resorts is part of National Veterinary Associates (NVA) — the largest private owner of veterinary hospitals and pet resorts in North America, with 1,300+ locations. We’re proud to be in an $8B+ industry that continues to grow as pet parents seek premium, trusted care for their furry family members.

At NVA Pet Resorts, our mission is simple: create safe, fun, and loving environments for pets while providing experiences for our clients and team members.

What You’ll Do

As a Pet Pro, you’ll be hands-on in both daycare and boarding, providing safe, loving care while keeping our resort clean and welcoming.

Your day may include:

  • Walking dogs and supervising playgroups
  • Feeding pets and administering medications
  • Cleaning and sanitizing pet rooms and common areas
  • Monitoring pet health, behavior, and interactions
  • Documenting care notes and communicating with leadership
  • Engaging pets in enrichment activities like fetch, walks, and basic obedience games
  • Comforting shy guests and managing high-energy groups
  • Laundry and general facility upkeep
  • And yes — you’ll scoop poop, clean messes, o home with fur on your clothes, and probably get plenty of sloppy kisses.

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking someone who is:

  • Passionate about dogs and cats
  • Gentle, patient, and safety-focused
  • Comfortable supervising multiple dogs at once
  • Able to recognize and prevent conflicts in playgroups
  • Detail-oriented with strong documentation habits
  • Friendly and comfortable speaking with pet parents
  • Reliable, punctual, and team-oriented

You must be able to:

  • Stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 60 lbs
  • Work indoors and outdoors in various temperatures
  • Handle large and small dogs confidently
  • Work weekends and holidays
  • Be comfortable around pet messes and cleaning products

Work Schedule

  • Full-Time
  • Weekend availability required
  • Monday–Friday shifts
  • Holiday shifts required

Benefits & Perks

  • Health, Dental & Vision
  • Insurance for FT
  • Paid Training
  • Employee Pet Care Discounts
  • Tips
  • Career growth opportunities within NVA

Equal Opportunity Employer

NVA Pet Resorts is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace.

If you love animals, enjoy staying active, and want to work in a fast-paced, pet-focused environment — we’d love to meet you.
