What is a Kelly Pipe and what is its role in drilling operations?

A Kelly Pipe, often simply called a 'Kelly,' is a crucial piece of equipment used in oil and gas drilling rigs. It is a heavy, square or hexagonal steel pipe that is attached to the drill string and fits into the rotary table. The Kelly Pipe transmits rotary motion from the rotary table to the drill string, allowing the drill bit to bore into the ground. Its unique shape allows it to be rotated while also being able to move vertically, which is essential for drilling deeper wells efficiently and safely.
