Junior Structural Bim Modeler information

What is a junior structural BIM modeler?

Junior Structural BIM Modelers are entry-level professionals who use Building Information Modeling (BIM) software to create and manage digital models of structures. They assist engineers and senior modelers in developing accurate 3D representations of buildings, bridges, or other structures, focusing on structural components like beams, columns, and foundations. Their work helps improve collaboration, detect design clashes early, and ensure that construction projects are completed efficiently and accurately.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior structural BIM modeler?

To thrive as a Junior Structural BIM Modeler, you need a basic understanding of structural engineering concepts, proficiency in BIM software such as Autodesk Revit, and typically a diploma or degree in civil or structural engineering or a related field. Familiarity with tools like AutoCAD, Navisworks, and BIM 360, as well as knowledge of industry standards and building codes, is also important. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and a willingness to learn help you collaborate with engineers and adapt to evolving project requirements. These skills ensure accurate model development, effective teamwork, and the ability to support complex construction projects efficiently.

What are some common challenges faced by junior structural BIM modelers when collaborating with multidisciplinary teams?

Junior Structural BIM Modelers often encounter challenges when coordinating with architects, MEP engineers, and contractors due to varying modeling standards and project requirements. Effective communication is essential to ensure that structural designs are accurately integrated with other disciplines. Additionally, junior modelers may need to quickly adapt to project-specific BIM protocols and software updates, while balancing multiple deadlines. Proactively seeking clarification and maintaining organized model documentation can help overcome these hurdles and contribute to smoother project delivery.

What is the difference between Junior Structural Bim Modeler vs Structural Draftsman?

AspectJunior Structural Bim ModelerStructural Draftsman
CredentialsAssociate degree or diploma in CAD, BIM, or Civil/Structural EngineeringHigh school diploma or technical certificate in drafting or CAD
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, BIM teams, collaborative project settingsDrafting departments, construction sites, architectural firms
Industry UsageCommonly used in BIM workflows for structural modelingPrimarily involved in creating 2D drawings from designs

The Junior Structural Bim Modeler focuses on creating 3D BIM models for structural projects, often working with software like Revit. In contrast, a Structural Draftsman mainly produces detailed 2D drawings for construction. While both roles require CAD skills, the Bim Modeler emphasizes 3D modeling and coordination, whereas the Draftsman concentrates on drafting and documentation.

Job description

Job Title: BIM Coordinator – Electrical ConstructionJob Description

This role focuses on the creation and coordination of detailed 2D and 3D electrical models and drawings for commercial field installations. You will use Autodesk Revit and Navisworks to produce accurate representations of electrical systems, support clash detection and resolution, and collaborate closely with project teams and engineers to ensure constructability, code compliance, and effective installation in a fast-paced electrical construction environment.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain accurate 2D and 3D electrical drawings and models for field installations, ensuring they reflect current design and construction requirements.
  • Read and interpret architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical floor plans, sections, and elevations to inform electrical modeling and coordination.
  • Create precise 3D representations of electrical components, including conduits, cables, and related systems, to support comprehensive coordination with other trades.
  • Participate in coordination meetings with project teams and sub-contractors to identify and resolve clashes while maintaining budget, constructability, and compliance with NEC code requirements.
  • Collaborate with the engineer of record and project management staff to resolve design and coordination issues, explain drawings to production and construction teams, and implement necessary adjustments.
  • Produce detailed shop drawings, cross-sections of underground installations, conduits, cables, and other electrical systems to provide clear instructions for fabrication and installation crews.
  • Travel to various project sites as required to support coordination efforts, verify field conditions, and assist installation teams.
  • Comply with all company operating policies, procedures, and safety programs, promoting a safe and efficient work environment.
  • Use Autodesk Revit and Navisworks to perform 3D coordination, clash detection, and model updates throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Support the BIM team with documentation, model management, and continuous improvement of BIM standards and workflows.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support project delivery and BIM team objectives.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 2 years of professional, post-graduate experience in a BIM Coordinator role within the electrical construction space.
  • Professional, hands-on experience using Autodesk Revit for electrical modeling and production of 2D and 3D drawings.
  • Proficiency with Autodesk Navisworks for 3D coordination and clash detection.
  • Strong knowledge of 3D coordination processes and best practices in a construction environment.
  • Direct experience within electrical construction, including familiarity with electrical systems, conduits, cables, and related installations.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical plans, sections, and elevations.
  • Understanding of NEC code requirements and constructability considerations as they relate to electrical installations.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, project managers, field supervisors, and other trade partners.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, clear, and usable drawings and models.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Electrical knowledge is highly preferred, although experience in other construction disciplines with strong BIM skills will be considered.
  • Experience with Autodesk Construction Cloud, Procore, or other model viewing and collaboration software is preferred.
  • Familiarity with shop drawing production and documentation for fabrication and installation crews.
  • Experience working in a BIM team environment, contributing to shared models and coordinated workflows.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced commercial construction setting.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Comfort working with specifications and construction drawings to ensure alignment between design intent and field installation.
Work Environment

This position is based in a commercial electrical construction environment that delivers a wide range of services, including construction, maintenance, repair and retrofit, voice/data, and structured cabling across the Chicago metropolitan area. The organization has proven expertise in mission-critical and sustainability projects, riser management, prefabrication, and large-scale data center work, supported by an ISO 9001:2015 certified quality management system, a comprehensive CAD department, a pre-construction division, RCDD-qualified network designers, and BICSI-certified installers. The company has extensive experience on commercial, light industrial, data center, hospital, and high-rise projects, with most work on the build side and a significant focus on data centers, where electrical project values commonly range from tens of millions to over one hundred million dollars. The BIM team currently consists of seven professionals, and the broader Downers Grove office has around 150 employees, many of whom work in the field. This role is initially 100% in-office, with standard hours of 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., including a 30-minute lunch break. After six months as a direct employee, you may be eligible for two remote days per week, reflecting a hybrid work option. The environment is highly collaborative and technology-driven, leveraging Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, and other construction technology platforms to support large, complex electrical projects in the Chicagoland area.
