What is a junior software test engineer?

Junior Software Test Engineers are entry-level professionals responsible for ensuring the quality and functionality of software applications. They execute test cases, identify and document bugs, and collaborate with developers to resolve issues. Typically, they work under the guidance of senior testers or quality assurance leads and gradually build their skills in areas such as test automation, bug tracking, and software development life cycles. Their work is essential for delivering reliable and user-friendly software products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior software test engineer?

To thrive as a Junior Software Test Engineer, you need a solid understanding of software development life cycles, test case design, and basic programming or scripting skills, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with test management tools like JIRA, automation frameworks such as Selenium, and knowledge of version control systems like Git are commonly required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills help you identify issues and collaborate effectively with developers. These competencies ensure software quality, minimize defects, and contribute to efficient, reliable product releases.

What are some common challenges faced by junior software test engineers when transitioning from manual to automated testing?

Junior Software Test Engineers often find the transition from manual to automated testing challenging due to the need to learn new programming languages and testing frameworks. Adapting to writing and maintaining test scripts, understanding version control systems, and troubleshooting automation failures can initially be overwhelming. However, most organizations provide mentorship, training resources, and collaboration opportunities with senior engineers to help ease this transition. Over time, developing these automation skills not only increases efficiency but also opens up further career advancement opportunities.

Job description

AtCharged Monkey, we are a team of talented and experienced game makers. Our ambitions are huge, and only a worldโ€‘class team could achieve them. To date, weโ€™ve built a team of incredibly talented individuals from all over the world, who together are bringing industryโ€‘defining games to life.

We embrace AIโ€‘forward development practices and expect our engineers to be curious and pragmatic about how these tools can raise the bar.

In partnership with SCOPELY, one of the biggest gaming studios worldwide (known for IPs like StarTrekโ„ขFleet Command, MONOPOLY GO!, etc.), we are in the early stages of development on an ambitious, unannounced, crossโ€‘platform Strategy/MMO title.

Do you want to be a part of talented and passionate game makers to join us on this exciting journey?

We are seeking an experienced Senior TEST AUTOMATION Backend Engineer to join our team focused on core server technology, based in Prague / Bratislava on a hybrid or remote basis.

What will you do?
  • Work in a crossโ€‘functional agile team and be responsible for designing, developing, and evolving systems that validate and improve the performance, scalability, and reliability of backend services running on AWS
  • Design and implement performance and reliability strategies for our core backend systems, including defining serviceโ€‘level expectations (latency, throughput, error rates) and validating them under realistic conditions
  • Build frameworks and tooling to simulate realโ€‘world production scenarios, including multiโ€‘service interactions, high concurrency, and network variability
  • Develop and maintain load, stress, and endurance testing systems, integrated into CI/CD pipelines to detect regressions before production
  • Analyze system behavior using metrics, logs, and distributed tracing, identifying bottlenecks and driving improvements across services
  • Define and drive the adoption of a comprehensive testing strategy across backend services, including unit tests, integration tests (leveraging test containers), and clear guidelines for when and how each layer should be applied
  • Enable a shiftโ€‘left quality culture by building tooling, patterns, and best practices that allow teams to detect regressions early
  • Collaborate with feature teams to improve system design, resilience, and scalability, acting as a force multiplier across backend engineering
  • Leverage AI tools and agentic workflows in your daily work โ€” from tech planning, code generation and review to exploring novel solutions.
What weโ€™re looking for?
  • 5+ years experience as a software engineer working on backend systems, distributed systems (operating in the Public Cloud), or other relevant areas with a strong passion for testing and performance testing
  • Professional experience building and operating highly available, scalable backend systems, such as MMO game servers, highโ€‘traffic services, or realโ€‘time applications
  • Experience with Python and its ecosystem, including familiarity with asynchronous programming, concurrency, and performance considerations
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems, including:
    • Serviceโ€‘toโ€‘service communication, including eventโ€‘driven architectures
    • Failure modes and resilience patterns
    • Stateful vs stateless architectures
  • Experience designing and implementing highly scalable and lowโ€‘latency systems, including use of Redis, DynamoDB, or similar technologies
  • Strong understanding of API design (REST/gRPC) and ability to write efficient, lowโ€‘latency code
  • Experience working in cloud environments (AWS) and familiarity with containerized deployments (Docker)
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and infrastructure automation
  • Experience using observability tools (Datadog, logs, tracing) to analyze and debug system behavior
  • Handsโ€‘on experience working with AIโ€‘assisted development tools (e.g. GitHub Copilot, Codex, Claude Code) and an understanding of how agentic workflows can augment engineering productivity.
Bonus Points
  • Experience with load testing frameworks like K6, Locust
  • Understanding of SRE concepts like: SLA, SLO, error budgets
  • Experience with load testing messaging systems such as NATS;
  • Experience with relational databases like MySQL.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure-as-Code (preferred Terraform) for managing infrastructure deployment
  • Understanding of network infrastructure and cloud networking concepts, such as VPC, Subnet, Security Groups, and Load Balancing
  • Understanding modern observability stacks like Kibana / Datadog to perform log querying and dashboards

Weโ€™d love to hear from you! Please contact us via this online form here.
