JUNIOR IT DEVELOPER

The Junior IT Application Developer is a curious, conscientious developer who uses problem-solving, clear communication, and modern AI tools to build and support the business systems that keep our operations moving. This role is based in Brookfield, WI.

The primary purpose of this position is to deliver and maintain reliable internal applications by building features, resolving defects, and supporting users under the guidance of senior developers. This is an AI-forward team: developers use tools such as Microsoft Copilot Studio, Cowork, and Snowflake CoCo every day to accelerate troubleshooting, speed up code reviews, and build new applications from scratch. An openness to learning and applying AI coding tools is essential to success in this role.

Primary responsibilities include:

Approximate time allocation: [50]% feature development and enhancements, [30]% defect resolution and user support, [10]% documentation and handoff, [10]% learning and AI tool adoption.

Develop and Maintain Business Applications:

  • Build features and enhancements in internal applications.
  • Diagnose and fix defects, verifying resolution with the requestor.
  • Write clean, simple code and unit tests with guidance from senior developers.
  • Participate in code reviews, both as author and reviewer.

Support Users and Business Partners:

  • Work closely with analysts and end users to understand requests and clarify requirements.
  • Ask clear questions, listen carefully, and follow through on commitments.
  • Communicate status, obstacles, and completion clearly and proactively.

Document and Transition Work:

  • Document what you build so others can use, support, and maintain it.
  • Maintain accurate records of changes, configurations, and known issues.
  • Support handoff of completed work to operations and support teams.

Apply AI Development Tools to Accelerate Delivery:

  • Use Copilot Studio, Cowork, Snowflake CoCo, and similar tools to troubleshoot issues and identify root causes faster.
  • Prototype and build new applications and automations with AI assistance, from concept through working solution.
  • Review, test, and validate AI-generated code, retaining full ownership of quality, security, and maintainability.

REPORTING STRUCTURE

  • This position reports to the SR. Manager - Applications

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
  • 1-3 years of hands-on development experience; internships, co-ops, and entry-level roles count.
  • Experience with at least one programming language (e.g., C#, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, or Python), plus basic SQL and Git.
  • Openness to AI coding tools and a willingness to learn prompt-driven development while owning the quality of the result.
  • Very good technical learning ability, with the capacity to pick up new tools and concepts quickly.
  • Proven problem-solving skills, including the ability to break problems down and test proposed solutions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain ideas clearly and write concise updates.
  • Conscientious work style with high attention to detail and consistent follow-through on commitments.
  • Curiosity, persistence, and a positive, team-first mindset.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and manage multiple priorities.
  • Familiarity with REST APIs, debugging tools, and basic cloud concepts preferred.
  • Exposure to dashboards or data work (Power BI, Snowflake, SQL tuning) preferred.
  • Exposure to automation or scripting preferred.
  • Prior use of AI assistants (GitHub Copilot, Copilot Studio, ChatGPT, or similar) to write, debug, or refactor code preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods.
  • On-site presence required at Brookfield, WI corporate office.

JOB EXPECTATIONS:

  • Completes onboarding to team standards for version control, code review, and CI/CD; independently submits and merges [first production change] by day [30].
  • Builds working knowledge of [2-3] core supported applications and their primary data sources by day [90].
  • Resolves assigned low-complexity defects with minimal rework.
  • Continuously develop technical skills, including proficiency with approved AI development tools, through training, pairing, and self-directed learning.
  • Maintain and expand working knowledge of supported applications, data sources, and integrations.
  • Follow company standards for secure coding, data handling, and responsible use of AI tools.
  • Uphold Hydrite's Standard of Excellence through a continuous commitment to maintain quality facilities and provide quality products and services to internal and external customers.
  • Perform all duties outlined in relevant SOPs and all other duties to be assigned.
  • Work with other staff members to maintain workload balances. Provide back-up support, as necessary.
  • Support effective communication with all Hydrite departments where responsibilities overlap to ensure success of the branch team.
