Junior Software Programmer information

What is a junior software programmer?

A Junior Software Programmer is an entry-level professional responsible for writing, testing, and maintaining code under the guidance of more experienced developers. They typically work on specific tasks or small projects, learning industry practices and programming languages on the job. Junior programmers often collaborate with other team members to develop software solutions and resolve bugs, gaining experience as they grow into more advanced roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior software programmer?

To thrive as a Junior Software Programmer, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, typically demonstrated by a degree in computer science or related field and experience with languages like Python, Java, or C++. Familiarity with version control systems (such as Git), basic debugging tools, and integrated development environments (IDEs) is also important. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills that help you learn quickly and collaborate with team members. These skills ensure you can contribute to codebases efficiently, adapt to new technologies, and support team goals in a fast-evolving technical environment.

What are some common challenges a junior software programmer might face during their first year on the job?

In their first year, Junior Software Programmers often encounter challenges such as adapting to new codebases, understanding development workflows, and balancing learning with productivity. They may also find it difficult to communicate technical issues clearly to team members or to estimate how long a task will take. However, most teams provide mentorship and regular feedback to help new programmers grow and integrate smoothly with the team’s processes.

Job description

Job Title: Junior Applications Engineer

Job Description

The Junior Applications Engineer develops preliminary hardware and PCB architectures, supports proposal and bid activities, and contributes to cost and feasibility assessments for complex electronic systems. This role works closely with business development and engineering teams to translate client requirements into conceptual designs, technical documentation, and early-stage hardware solutions that support rail, transit, and national security projects.

Responsibilities

  • Develop preliminary hardware and PCB architectures, including initial schematics, high-level PCB component selections, and board layout concepts during bid and proposal phases.
  • Collaborate with business development and engineering leads to write technical proposal responses, compliance matrices, and hardware scope descriptions.
  • Prepare preliminary Bills of Materials (BOMs), component cost models, non-recurring engineering (NRE) hardware estimates, and design timeline projections.
  • Evaluate project requirements to specify baseline cybersecurity features such as hardware root-of-trust and encrypted interfaces, as well as microcontroller and software architectures required for proposals.
  • Review client technical product specification (TPS) documents, requests for proposals (RFPs), and relevant standards to assess technical feasibility, risks, and design trade-offs.
  • Support technical meetings with clients by presenting conceptual designs and explaining hardware architecture decisions.
  • Interface with suppliers and vendors to obtain early quotes, assess lead times, and gather component availability information.
  • Create and maintain clear technical documentation, including technical proposals, requirements analyses, and bid-related documents.
  • Contribute to embedded systems development planning by aligning hardware design concepts with embedded software requirements and constraints.

Essential Skills

  • Experience in electrical hardware design, including understanding of electronic components and circuit behavior.
  • Proficiency in PCB design, including board layout concepts and component selection.
  • Ability to perform schematic capture and translate design concepts into clear electronic schematics.
  • Knowledge of hardware architecture for embedded and electronic systems.
  • Experience preparing Bills of Materials (BOMs) and basic cost estimates for hardware components.
  • Ability to write and contribute to technical proposals, including technical sections and compliance matrices.
  • Strong technical documentation and technical writing skills for requirements, proposals, and design descriptions.
  • Experience with requirements analysis, including reviewing TPS documents, RFPs, and relevant standards.
  • Familiarity with compliance standards relevant to electronic and embedded systems.
  • Understanding of embedded systems development and the interaction between hardware and software.
  • Ability to evaluate and specify baseline cybersecurity features such as hardware root-of-trust and encrypted interfaces.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in electronics design for applications in transportation, industrial, or safety-critical environments.
  • Exposure to microcontroller-based systems and related software architectures.
  • Experience contributing to bid writing and supporting business development with technical input.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients, internal engineering teams, and external suppliers.
  • Strong analytical skills to assess feasibility, risks, and trade-offs in early-stage designs.
  • Interest in working across the full product lifecycle, from concept and design through manufacturing and deployment.

Work Environment

The role operates in a hands-on, collaborative engineering environment where team members engage in a broad range of activities spanning design, manufacturing, testing, and product development. Engineers gain exposure to the entire product lifecycle and work on innovative lighting, electronics, and energy storage solutions that support rail, transit, and national security applications. The environment emphasizes close collaboration between engineering and business development teams, frequent interaction with clients and suppliers, and practical involvement in bringing conceptual designs toward manufacturable products.
