Position Summary:
In this role, the individual will act as the lead plumbing engineer on projects performing layout and design of building plumbing systems such as water supply, domestic water heating, domestic water distribution, sanitary drainage, waste and vent systems, fuel storage and compressed air.

Essential Job Functions:
The following duties are considered essential to the role. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions:

  • Design and engineer plumbing and fire protection systems for commercial, institutional, industrial, and government facilities, including domestic water supply and distribution, domestic water heating, sanitary drainage, waste and vent systems, fuel gas systems, compressed air systems, and fire protection systems.
  • Develop plumbing system concepts and perform engineering analyses, calculations, equipment sizing, system layouts, and equipment selections in accordance with project requirements and applicable codes and standards.
  • Prepare, review, and coordinate plumbing engineering drawings, specifications, reports, and other construction documents with architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and civil disciplines.
  • Conduct field investigations, site visits, and building condition assessments to evaluate existing systems, verify field conditions, assess code compliance, and support renovation, rehabilitation, and new construction projects.
  • Review and respond to Requests for Information (RFIs), submittals, shop drawings, change orders, and other construction-related documentation to ensure technical accuracy and compliance with project requirements.
  • Provide construction-phase engineering support by evaluating field conditions, resolving design and installation issues, and performing site observations of work in progress or completed installations.
  • Communicate and coordinate effectively with clients, project managers, design team members, contractors, regulatory agencies, and other project stakeholders throughout all phases of project delivery.
  • Utilize Building Information Modeling (BIM) software, including Revit, to develop and coordinate plumbing system designs, or provide technical oversight of BIM production efforts.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and oversight to junior engineers and designers by delegating work assignments, reviewing deliverables, and supporting professional development.
  • Perform quality control reviews of engineering calculations, designs, drawings, specifications, and other project deliverables to ensure technical accuracy and consistency.
  • Assist department leadership with the development, implementation, and maintenance of engineering standards, design guidelines, specifications, and best practices.
  • Maintain advanced knowledge of applicable plumbing, fire protection, energy, accessibility, and building codes, regulations, and industry standards and apply them to project design and execution.
  • Support project planning and execution by coordinating technical activities, monitoring assigned tasks, and contributing to successful project delivery.
  • Execute work in accordance with internal quality procedures, applicable codes, legislation, and industry standards to ensure project compliance and technical excellence.
  • Actively pursue continuous learning opportunities to maintain a high degree of technical knowledge and professional competency in MEP engineering.
  • Promote and maintain a culture of safety by working in a safe manner at all times and promptly reporting all health and safety incidents or concerns.
  • Perform additional tasks as required to support project goals, team objectives, and company initiatives.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree in engineering technology, mechanical engineering, architectural engineering, or a related technical field
  • Minimum of fifteen (15) years of progressively responsible experience in plumbing and/or fire protection system design within the Architecture/Engineering (A/E) consulting industry.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of plumbing, fire protection, and applicable building codes, standards, and industry practices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams, clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability and willingness to conduct site visits, field investigations, and building condition assessments as required.
  • Ability to work in a hybrid environment, including regular in-office collaboration and occasional travel to project sites and client locations.
  • Proficiency in Revit, and good knowledge of industry software, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Active and clear driver's license, including a successful clearance of a Motor Vehicle history check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, architectural engineering, engineering technology, or a related field.
  • Certified in Plumbing Design (CPD) certification 
  • Experience mentoring and overseeing junior engineering and design staff.
  • Experience working on K-12 educational facilities, federal facilities, or other institutional projects.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for extended periods while performing computer-based tasks, attending meetings, or preparing design documentation.
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers to operate computers, printers, and other office equipment.
  • Visual acuity to review detailed drawings, specifications, and computer screens for extended periods.
  • Ability to clearly communicate through speech, hearing, and written correspondence in person, virtually, and via telephone.
  • Ability to travel to and from project sites, client meetings, and other offices as required.
  • Physical capability to walk, stand, climb stairs or ladders, and navigate uneven terrain, active construction sites, and partially completed structures.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry materials, drawings, or equipment weighing up to approximately 25 pounds.
  • Capacity to use personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, vests, and steel-toed boots when required.
  • Tolerance for varying environmental conditions, including exposure to weather, noise, and dust during site visits.

Work Environment / Environmental Factors:

  • The majority of work is performed in a professional office setting with a collaborative, team-oriented atmosphere.
  • Work involves extensive use of computers, digital communication tools, and design software in an open or hybrid office environment.
  • This role requires frequent interaction with project teams, clients, consultants, and other stakeholders through in-person meetings, video conferences, and phone calls.
  • Periodic travel to construction sites, client offices, and off-site meetings is required.
  • Work at project sites may involve exposure to active construction environments, including noise, dust, varying temperatures, and weather conditions.
  • The position requires adaptability to shifting project priorities, client expectations, and multidisciplinary coordination.
  • Work may occasionally involve tight deadlines, multiple concurrent projects, and high attention to detail under time-sensitive conditions.
  • Collaboration across multiple time zones or with remote team members may be necessary, depending on project scope and firm structure.

Additional Information:

  • This is a full-time, regular position, with typically standard working hours between 8am - 5pm, Monday through Friday. However, this position may require occasional extended hours to meet project milestones, deadlines, or client needs.
  • This position is considered hybrid, with a 50% office presence, 10% site visits and/or client meetings, and 40% remote presence (ability to work from a home location). This arrangement is subject to review and may change based on project need or at the company's discretion.    

Anticipated Hiring Range

  • $90,000 - $125,000. Please note that this range reflects the pay scale that Tetra Tech reasonably expects to pay for the role. The salary will also depend on various factors, such as job duties and requirements, and relevant experience and skills.
