Junior Software Development Engineer In Test information

What is a junior software development engineer in test?

A Junior Software Development Engineer In Test (SDET) is an entry-level professional who combines software development and quality assurance skills to design, develop, and maintain automated tests for software applications. These engineers work closely with developers and testers to ensure the software meets quality standards and functions as intended. They typically write test scripts, identify bugs, and help improve the overall testing process to deliver reliable products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior software development engineer in test?

To thrive as a Junior Software Development Engineer In Test, you need a solid understanding of software testing principles, programming fundamentals (commonly in Java, Python, or C#), and a relevant bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with test automation frameworks (such as Selenium or JUnit), version control systems like Git, and continuous integration tools is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and a proactive attitude help you identify issues and collaborate within development teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring software quality, streamlining testing processes, and supporting overall team productivity.

What are some common challenges faced by junior software development engineers in test when starting out, and how can they overcome them?

Junior Software Development Engineers in Test (SDETs) often encounter challenges such as understanding complex codebases, balancing manual and automated testing, and communicating effectively with development teams. To overcome these, it's helpful to ask clarifying questions, seek mentorship, and actively participate in code reviews. Building a solid foundation in both programming and testing principles, along with collaborating closely with more experienced SDETs and developers, can accelerate learning and confidence in the role.

Senior QA Engineer / SDET

In Time Tec Meridian, Idaho, United States

About this position

In Time Tec, a global software solutions company based in Meridian, Idaho, is hiring a full-timeSenior QA Engineer / SDET Founded in 2009, In Time Tec is committed to creating abundance for our partners, employees, stakeholders, and the community. We partner with clients, often working onsite in their offices to explore and understand business requirements to deliver long-term custom software services. We are recognized as one of Inc. 5000’s fastest-growing privately-held companies and have been named as one of the Best Places to Work in Idaho for five consecutive years.

In Time Tec offers competitive compensation, health/vision/dental benefits, 401k, FSAs, tenure-based paid time off, and countless personal and professional development opportunities.

Those who thrive at In Time Tec are focused first and foremost on people and making a difference for others. They are committed to and have a passion for learning their craft and developing themselves as leaders. Competency to deliver and perform is required. Work is seen as a vehicle to create abundance for our partners, teams, families, and community.

Those who need predictability, clearly defined roadmaps, consistent direction, and a set schedule may find In Time Tec's work environment challenging.

NextGenAgTech with In Time Tecbuilds web and mobile software used tooperatefeedlots, manage cattlepurchasingand transportation, andmaintainfinancial records used by owners and lenders. Our products support yard operations, animal health, billing, financing, logistics, and reporting acrossweb, iOS, and Android.

The testing challenge is consequential: a defect can affect an operator’s books, an animal-health workflow, or a time-sensitive decision in the yard. We are expanding QA capacity while building automation that helps us release faster without accepting greater operational or financial risk.

The mandate

You will own test strategy and automation architecture for a product suite spanning yard operations, cattlepurchasing, financial workflows, and dispatch. This is a hands‑on senior individual‑contributor role: you will write code, make framework decisions, review tests, mentor engineers, and give leadership a clear view of release risk.

Our automation practice is growing rather than finished. You will have meaningful authority over framework andcoverage decisions, along with responsibility for ensuring those choicesremainmaintainable as the product evolves.

Build software that has to work

What you will own
  • End-to-end test strategy: what to automate, what should remain exploratory or manual, and where testing investment reduces the most risk.
  • Playwright framework architecture, including fixtures, reusable utilities, parallel execution, tracing, reporting, and maintainability standards.
  • UI, API, integration, contract, and data-layer coverage for critical workflows.
  • Release-quality gates and risk-based recommendations about whether software is ready to ship.
  • CI/CD test health, including lower flake, faster feedback, and actionable failure reporting.
  • Root‑cause analysis of production incidents and escaped defects, translated into durable regression coverage.
  • Standards for AI-assisted test design and automation, including human review and coverage-gap analysis.
  • Technical mentoring and testability guidance for QA and development engineers.
What you would test
  • Yard operations, including lots, pens, feed delivery, commodities, animal-health records, and treatments.
  • Financial workflows, including billing, interest, loans, payments, statements, hedges, and lender-facing reporting.
  • Purchasing and logistics, including cattle records, hauling, dispatch, and automated notifications.
  • Customer workflows across web, iOS, and Android in English and Spanish.
What success looks like

In your first 60 days, you assess current coverage, test debt, pipeline health, and the highest‑risk operational and financial workflows. Within six months, you establish the framework architecture, automation priorities, ownership standards, and initial release‑quality gates. Within one year, the team has materially better regression signal, more stable automated coverage, and a faster path from code change to trustworthy feedback.

What you bring
  • Five or more years of experience in QA or SDET roles, including substantial hands‑on test-automation experience.
  • A track record of designing or significantly scaling a production test-automation framework, not only writing individual tests.
  • Deep, practical Playwright or comparable modern automation experience, including fixtures, parallelization, retries, tracing, and reporting.
  • Strong programming or scripting experience in TypeScript, Python, C#, or comparable language.
  • Experience with API, integration, contract, and CI/CD testing.
  • Strong SQL skills for test-data setup, financial and operational validation, and investigation across application and database state.
  • Risk-based release judgment and the ability to communicate that judgment to technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and improving how a team designs for testability.
Helpful, not required
  • Mobile automation for native iOS or Android applications.
  • Performance and load testing, accessibility testing, visual regression, or security‑testing fundamentals such as the OWASP Top 10.
  • Internal quality tooling, dashboards, or production‑telemetry feedback loops.
  • Experience in agriculture, fintech, logistics, or another operationally sensitive domain.
Technology

Our core testing environment includes Playwright, Postman, GitHub, GitHub Actions, Azure SQL, Docker, and AI-assisted test design and automation.
