Job Description

A Glimpse of the Job

The Research Scientist conducts advanced independent research in applied artificial intelligence (AI) with a focus on solving complex computer vision and robotics challenges. This role will draw from their previous experience to design and execute innovative approaches to project questions. In this role, the Research Scientist will contribute to the scholarly ecosystem by writing or coauthoring research papers, publications, and grant proposals while also ensuring the lab environment is properly prepared and maintained. The position may involve collaborating with faculty and fellow researchers as well as supervising junior research students, creating a dynamic setting where scientific inquiry, mentorship, and handson experimentation come together.

Please note: This is a one-year job-contract which can be extended depending on the candidate's research output and lab-funding.

Opportunities to Contribute

Research

  • Will be responsible for conducting complex independent research into their field of field of applied artificial intelligence (AI) to solve computer vision and robotics problems.

  • Utilizes advanced knowledge and skills granted to them by their education and experience to complete research projects in their field of expertise.

  • Oversees the preparation and cleaning of worksite.

  • Organizes worksite and determines what supplies are necessary to continue research in an effective manner.

  • Analyzes research data and summarizes results.

  • Writes and may contribute to research papers, articles, publications.

  • Assists with grant proposal drafting and acquisition.

Mentoring/Supervision

  • May assist student researchers, Postdoctoral Research Associates, Assistant Research Scientists, and/or Associate Research Scientists who are working on research related to the project at TAMU.

  • May supervise assigned staff and/or students.

Presentations

  • Prepares presentation materials on research topics that may be presented to small and/or large groups.

  • Actively participates in the preparation of required technical progress reports to research sponsors.

Administrative Duties

  • Assist with scheduling of technical seminars and future advanced course structuring.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • PhD in a Computer Science, Engineering, and related fields.

  • Six years of related experience in a specialized and relevant field of research.

A well-qualified candidate will also possess:

  • Publication in top-tier publications (main-track) in robotics and computer vision venues such as IEEE ICRA, IEEE RAL, IEEE IROS, RSS, IEEE CVPR, ECCV, ICCV, ICML, ICLR, Intelligent Vehicles (IV) (at least one first other publication as of date of hire).

  • Experience with Robotics Operating System (ROS).

  • Experience with programming in python, pytorch, and related deep-learning APIs.

  • Excellent technical writing and presentation skills.

  • Analytical skills.

  • Working knowledge of deploying software on real-robotic platform.

  • Experience in training AI model on NVIDIA GPUs.

  • Must be able to work independently as part of a multidisciplinary collaborative team.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Machines and Equipment:

  • Candidate will be working on Arm-Robot and Jackal UGV robot.
