Junior React Developer Startup information

What does a junior React developer do at a startup?

A Junior React Developer at a startup is responsible for building and maintaining user interfaces using the React JavaScript library. They typically work closely with designers and other developers to implement features, fix bugs, and ensure the application's front-end is responsive and user-friendly. In a startup environment, they may also have opportunities to contribute ideas, learn new technologies, and take on additional responsibilities as the company grows.

What are some common challenges faced by junior React developers in a startup environment?

Junior React Developers in startups often encounter fast-paced work environments where priorities can shift quickly, requiring adaptability and a willingness to learn on the job. Collaboration is key, as you’ll likely work closely with designers, backend developers, and product managers to rapidly build and iterate on features. Limited resources and smaller teams mean you may take on a broader range of tasks than in larger companies, which can accelerate your learning but also present challenges in managing workloads. It's important to communicate proactively, seek feedback, and take initiative to overcome obstacles and grow your skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior React developer at a startup, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior React Developer at a startup, you need a solid understanding of JavaScript, React.js fundamentals, and basic web development concepts, typically supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, package managers (npm/yarn), and basic knowledge of RESTful APIs are usually expected. Proactive communication, eagerness to learn, and adaptability help you stand out in the fast-paced and collaborative startup environment. These skills are crucial for contributing effectively to dynamic projects, rapidly acquiring new technologies, and supporting the team’s growth.

Job description

We're hiring our first Site Reliability Engineer to join the central DevOps team and bring SRE principles to Talkiatry's engineering organization. Across our six product teams, you'll be the person who defines what reliability means here and builds the practices, tooling, and culture to deliver it. Reliability is foundational to safe, dependable patient care, and this role exists to make it a first-class part of how we build.

This is a high-leverage, founding role. You won't inherit an SRE playbook—you'll write it. Importantly, our product teams will continue to own on-call for their own services; you're not the pager. Instead, you'll partner with engineers across patient-facing and platform teams to establish SLOs, sharpen observability, reduce toil, and shift incident detection from "a stakeholder told us" to "our monitoring caught it first." You'll act as a force multiplier, making reliability a shared responsibility rather than a separate function, and you'll measure your impact in fewer outages and calmer, quieter on-call rotations for the teams you support.

About Talkiatry:

Talkiatry is transforming mental health care by making high-quality psychiatry more accessible, human, and sustainable for both patients and clinicians. Co-founded by a patient and a triple-board-certified psychiatrist, we were built to solve one of healthcare’s most urgent challenges: millions of people struggle to access mental health care, while clinicians face growing administrative burden and burnout. Through our technology-powered, in-network platform, we’re changing that, creating a better experience for patients and empowering clinicians to focus on delivering exceptional care.

Today, Talkiatry is the largest dedicated psychiatry practice in the U.S., with 750+ psychiatrists, 250+ therapists, and more than two million patient visits delivered nationwide. At our scale, every innovation has real impact. Every workflow we improve, every technology solution we build, and every patient experience we redesign helps thousands of clinicians provide better care to hundreds of thousands of patients. We’re not just growing quickly — we’re redefining how behavioral healthcare is delivered in America.

Joining Talkiatry means joining a mission-driven team that is solving complex problems at scale, driving meaningful change in healthcare, and building the future of mental health care with compassion, innovation, and purpose.

How Success Is Measured

This role is ultimately evaluated on its ability to minimize outages, specifically by:

  • Reducing the frequency of production outages across the organization over time.

  • Increasing the share of production incidents that our monitoring and alerting catch first—before they're reported by stakeholders or end users.

You will:
  • Define and roll out an SRE practice for a six-team organization: SLOs/SLIs, error budgets, and reliability standards that teams genuinely adopt.

  • Build and improve observability—metrics, logging, distributed tracing, dashboards, and alerting—so that more incidents are detected by monitoring before anyone outside engineering notices.

  • Drive down outage frequency by surfacing systemic reliability risks and partnering with teams to remediate them at the root.

  • Reduce toil through automation, infrastructure-as-code, and self-service tooling that teams can own and extend themselves.

  • Own the health and usability of our observability tooling, providing documentation and training where necessary.

  • Run production readiness reviews for new services and partner with engineering leadership on reliability priorities and capacity planning.

You have:
  • 7+ years in software or infrastructure engineering, with substantial hands-on SRE or production reliability experience.

  • A track record of reducing incidents and improving detection—the outcomes this role is judged on.

  • Hands-on experience defining SLOs/SLIs and using error budgets to guide engineering decisions.

  • Deep observability expertise across metrics, logging, tracing, and alerting (e.g., Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, or similar).

  • Strong experience operating production systems on AWS.

  • Proficiency with infrastructure-as-code (e.g., Terraform) and comfort building automation and tooling (Python, TypeScript, or similar).

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence and align teams you don't directly manage.

Nice to Have
  • Experience standing up an SRE function for the first time at a startup or scale-up.

  • Familiarity with the stack our teams run on (TypeScript/Node.js, React, AWS EKS & RDS).

  • Background in healthcare, tele-health, or other regulated, compliance-sensitive environments (e.g., HIPAA).

  • Kubernetes or container orchestration experience.

Why Talkiatry:
  • Top-notch team: we're a diverse, experienced group motivated to make a difference in mental health care

  • Collaborative environment: be part of building something from the ground up at a fast-paced startup

  • Excellent benefits: medical, dental, vision, effective day 1 of employment, 401K with match, generous PTO plus paid holidays, paid parental leave, and more!

  • Grow your career with us: hone your skills and build new ones with our Learning team as Talkiatry expands

  • It all comes back to care: we’re a mental health company, and we put our team’s well-being first
