Junior Rails information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Junior Rails Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Rails Developer, you need foundational knowledge of Ruby programming, Rails framework, web development principles, and a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with tools like Git, databases (such as PostgreSQL or MySQL), and testing frameworks (RSpec) is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective communication help you stand out in collaborative team environments. These skills and qualities are important for building reliable web applications, adapting to project requirements, and growing within a development team.

What types of projects and tasks can a Junior Rails developer expect to work on in their first year?

As a Junior Rails developer, you can expect to work on a mix of feature development, bug fixes, and code reviews, often under the guidance of more experienced team members. You’ll likely contribute to building new functionalities, maintaining existing applications, and writing tests to ensure code quality. Collaboration is common—you’ll work closely with front-end developers, designers, and QA testers during sprint cycles. This role offers plenty of opportunities to learn best practices, improve your coding skills, and become familiar with agile workflows.

What are Junior Rails developers?

Junior Rails developers are entry-level software engineers who specialize in building web applications using the Ruby on Rails framework. They typically have a foundational understanding of Ruby programming and Rails conventions but are still gaining experience with best practices, testing, and deployment. Junior Rails developers often work under the guidance of more senior engineers, assisting with tasks like coding features, fixing bugs, and learning the development lifecycle. Their role is a stepping stone toward more advanced positions in web development.

About the Role
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to help design, build, and maintain the core systems that power the MealSuite platform. This role will play a key part in delivering product roadmap initiatives, improving system performance, and ensuring high-quality code across our Ruby on Rails applications. You will collaborate closely with Product, Design, and Engineering teams to deliver scalable solutions while mentoring other developers and contributing to technical architecture decisions.

What You’ll Do
• Design, develop, and maintain scalable Ruby on Rails applications and services
• Own features end-to-end from design through deployment, testing, and support
• Debug complex issues and optimize application performance, database queries, and system reliability
• Conduct code reviews and promote engineering best practices, security standards, and code quality
• Contribute to architectural decisions and improvements to the technology stack
• Leverage AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude, Copilot, or similar) to accelerate development, improve code quality, and enhance problem-solving workflows
• Partner in identifying opportunities to incorporate AI capabilities into products and internal systems, contributing to an AI-forward engineering culture
• Collaborate with Product, Design, and QA to translate business needs into technical solutions
• Participate in Agile ceremonies and provide transparent updates on progress and blockers
• Mentor junior developers and support knowledge sharing across the engineering team

What You Bring
• Strong experience building production applications with Ruby on Rails
• Solid knowledge of relational databases (PostgreSQL or MySQL), SQL optimization, and RESTful APIs
• Experience with testing frameworks such as RSpec, Minitest, or Capybara and background job tools like Sidekiq or Resque
• Proficiency with Git and modern development workflows
• Experience debugging and optimizing production systems and delivering complex features end-to-end
• Strong understanding of software architecture, scalability, and clean coding practices
• Familiarity with AI-assisted engineering workflows (e.g., Claude, GitHub Copilot, or similar tools) and an interest in applying AI to improve developer productivity or product capabilities
• Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and collaborate across cross-functional teams
• 5+ years of professional software development experience including hands-on Ruby on Rails development

Why You’ll Love Working Here
• Unlimited paid time off – we trust our employees to create balance
• Retirement savings support – RRSP/401(k) matching at 100% up to 3%
• Health benefits – medical, dental, vision, life & disability insurance, and paid parental leave starting day one
