Job description

Position Purpose:

We are seeking a highly skilled Spectroscopist to lead advanced spectroscopic analysis and quality control operations in support of our internal research and development initiatives. This role requires deep expertise in infrared and Raman spectroscopy techniques, with a focus on materials characterization and quality assurance. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining critical spectroscopy instrumentation while developing and implementing robust analytical procedures to support our customers and ensure the highest standards of material quality control.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Spectroscopy Instrumentation & Operations
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory spectroscopy systems including infrared spectrometers/microscopes and Raman spectrometers/microscopes
  • Ensure optimal performance and accuracy of all spectroscopic instrumentation through preventive maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Develop and implement calibration protocols and quality assurance procedures for spectroscopic measurements
  • Stay current with advances in spectroscopy technology and recommend equipment upgrades or acquisitions
  • Quality Control & Analysis:
  • Perform comprehensive infrared and Raman quality control measurements of materials to support customer requirements
  • Analyze complex spectral data to identify material properties, composition, and potential quality issues
  • Generate detailed EMXLAB Quality Control reports with clear findings, interpretations, and recommendations
  • Ensure timely delivery of quality control results to meet project deadlines and customer expectations
  • Standard Operating Procedures & Process Improvement:
  • Develop, maintain, and continuously improve Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for spectroscopic data collection
  • Establish and document best practices for sample preparation, measurement protocols, and data analysis workflows
  • Train team members and internal customers on proper spectroscopic techniques and procedures
  •  Implement process improvements to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and reproducibility of measurements

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Expert-level knowledge of spectroscopic theory, measurement techniques, and data interpretation
  • Proven experience in materials characterization and quality control applications
  • Strong programming skills in MATLAB, Python, R, or similar analytical software platforms
  • Experience with statistical analysis methods including regression analysis and error quantification

Education/Experience:

A bachelor’s degree in a science field (i.e., physics, chemistry) from an accredited college or university with at least 12 years of experience in experimental or applied science (physics, chemistry, or related) OR a master’s degree in a science field (i.e., physics, chemistry) from an accredited college or university with at least 6 years of experience as described above OR a Ph.D. in a natural science.

Clearance:

The ability to obtain a Department of Defense Secret clearance and Department of Homeland Security Fitness is required for this position.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervision of the technical activities performed by the more junior staff members assigned to the project is required for this position.

Working Conditions/Equipment:

The incumbent professional is expected to be present at the work site and/or be available during regular business hours. He/she should also generally be available via e-mail or phone during non-business hours as needed to address critical issues or emergencies.
