Austin Bridge & Road is a leader in the heavy highway and transportation industry for more than 100 years, Austin Bridge & Road delivers asphalt and concrete services, and builds landmark projects such as complex highway interchanges, tollways, runways, bridges, rail projects, and water/wastewater facilities.
We are currently seeking interns for our 2027 Summer Heavy Civil Engineering Internship Program. As a summer intern you will gain intensive real world, hands-on jobsite experience directly from seasoned construction professionals at Austin's multi-million-dollar heavy civil construction projects. This is a paid 12 weeks full-time internship program that will start on Monday, May 17, 2027 and run through Friday, August 6, 2027. Our interns will report to their assigned project located in the Austin/San Antonio, Texas area. Our interns will also participate in various social and volunteer events with fellow employee-owners and have the great opportunity to visit an active project site. Intern Learning Opportunities:
  • Gain hands-on experience supporting active heavy civil construction projects and field operations.
  • Learn how engineering principles are applied to project planning, execution, quality, and safety.
  • Develop skills in reading construction drawings, specifications, and project documentation.
  • Collaborate with project engineers, superintendents, project managers, and field teams to understand the full project lifecycle.
  • Receive mentorship from industry professionals while exploring career paths in project engineering, construction management, and operations leadership.

As an employee-owner hired for an internship, you will be given the title of "Project Intern" and your duties could consist of:
  • Processing submittals by reviewing, stamping, filing and distributing submittals
  • Sending RFI's to architects and engineers
  • Resolving problems generated from the plans and specifications
  • Documentation- updating and distributing construction drawings, specification, shop drawings and samples
  • Participating in and aiding with weekly safety meetings as requested, including writing meeting minutes
  • Leading project orientation and maintenance of logs
  • Assisting with trade contractor coordination and scheduling
  • Assisting with maintaining project look ahead schedules
  • Verifying proper construction techniques per plans and specs (raise concerns and follow through until corrected)
  • Assisting with project planning and scheduling, giving interns a glimpse into the early stages of project development
  • Engaging in hands-on training with construction management software and tools, helping them develop valuable technical skills
  • Participating in team meetings and client interactions to understand the collaborative nature of our work
  • Supporting the documentation and reporting processes to ensure accurate and timely project records
  • Other miscellaneous duties as defined by the Project Manager or Superintendent

Requirements:
  • Must be an active junior or senior college student working toward a bachelor's degree in one of these fields: Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or similar
  • Targeted graduation date between August 2027 and December 2028
  • Must be able to work up to 40 hours per week; hours will vary depending on project schedule
  • Must be able to commute onsite to assigned location
  • Valid driver's license
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must have the ability to think analytically, present ideas professionally, and work in project teams
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work for ANY employer in the United States. Austin Bridge & Road is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this position.

Our interns are assigned a supervisor who is a professional with both expertise and educational background in the field. Interns can expect a preliminary meeting with their supervisor to discuss the goals, expectations, and desired outcomes of the internship. Employee-owners participating in an internship will be reviewed upon the completion of their internship. This review should be used as a tool to communicate the successes and learning outcomes of the internship. The supervisor will also complete any necessary paperwork that must be provided to the intern's school or university.
Individuals hired as interns will be classified as Temporary employee-owners as defined in Policy A-5. Temporary employee-owners are not eligible for vacation pay, holiday pay or any of the other benefits listed in Policy A-5.
Temporary employee-owners are expected to adhere to the same policies and procedures as regular, full-time employee-owners.
Employee-owners that are performing an internship are expected to work a regularly-scheduled workweek of 40 hours or more (overtime will be paid for any hours in excess of 40 at a rate one and one-half times the employee-owner's regular rate).
