What does a junior production engineer do?

A Junior Production Engineer assists in designing, implementing, and optimizing manufacturing processes within a production facility. They work closely with senior engineers and production teams to ensure products are made efficiently, safely, and to quality standards. Their tasks may include troubleshooting equipment issues, supporting process improvements, and collecting data for analysis. This entry-level role is ideal for recent engineering graduates seeking hands-on experience in a manufacturing environment.

What are some common challenges faced by junior production engineers, and how can these be addressed?

Junior Production Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to fast-paced manufacturing environments, troubleshooting unexpected equipment issues, and balancing multiple production deadlines. Building strong communication skills and being proactive in asking questions can help navigate these challenges. Additionally, seeking mentorship from senior engineers and participating in ongoing training can accelerate learning and problem-solving abilities, making it easier to integrate into the production team and contribute effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior production engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Production Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, problem-solving abilities, and typically a bachelor's degree in mechanical, manufacturing, or industrial engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, production management systems (such as ERP), and lean manufacturing methodologies is often required. Strong teamwork, communication, and adaptability help you excel in dynamic production environments. These skills are crucial for ensuring efficient operations, minimizing downtime, and supporting continuous improvement in manufacturing processes.

Job description

Overview
We're hiring Process Engineers to join our polymer compounding manufacturing team.
You'll spend most of your day on the production floor leading trials, troubleshooting manufacturing issues, improving throughput, and helping launch new products. This is a hands-on engineering role where you'll work directly with operators, supervisors, and maintenance to solve real production problems, not sit behind a desk designing processes that someone else has to implement.
As we continue investing in new equipment, new production lines, and new products, we're looking for experienced engineers who want to own their processes, mentor younger engineers, and build long-term careers with a stable company that gives engineers the freedom to make decisions and improve the plant.
What Makes This Opportunity Great
  • Own Your Process: Engineers have real authority to improve production, not just make recommendations.
  • Outstanding Benefits: 100% company-paid family health insurance plus annual bonus eligibility.
  • Hands-On Engineering: Spend more than half of your time on the production floor.
  • Continuous Investment: New products, new equipment, and major plant expansion projects.
  • Mentor the Next Generation: Join an experienced engineering team and help develop newer engineers.
  • Long-Term Growth: Build a career with increasing responsibility rather than chasing promotions between companies.

Compensation
  • $80k - $85k / yr
  • Annual bonus eligibility
  • 100% company-paid family medical, dental & vision

Responsibilities
  • Production Support: Troubleshoot production issues alongside operators and supervisors.
  • Process Trials: Lead trials for new products, raw materials, and equipment.
  • Process Optimization: Reduce scrap, downtime, and transition times.
  • Root Cause Analysis: Investigate production problems and implement permanent solutions.
  • Performance Monitoring: Review daily production data and identify process drift.
  • Manufacturing Documentation: Maintain formulas, production structures, and operating standards.
  • New Product Launches: Support products from development through production.
  • Engineer Development: Mentor junior engineers and train production personnel on new processes.

Requirements
Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering
  • 5+ years of manufacturing engineering experience
  • Root cause analysis and troubleshooting experience
  • Hands-on manufacturing process improvement
  • Comfortable working primarily on the production floor

Preferred
  • Mechanical, Chemical, Polymer, or Industrial Engineering degree
  • Polymer, plastics, or compounding experience
  • Continuous manufacturing experience
  • Experience leading production trials
  • Smaller manufacturing environment with broad ownership
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers
