Job description

Controls & Automation Engineer – Allen-Bradley & Custom Systems

$75,000 – $110,000 Base Salary + Profit Sharing • Greater Milwaukee Area • Comp-Time Travel Policy

  • COMPENSATION: $75,000 – $110,000 Starting Base Salary (tiered by Junior, Mid, and Senior engineering depth) + Annual Profit Sharing + Year-End Bonus
  • BALANCED TRAVEL: 25% – 50% Domestic Travel for field commissioning with guaranteed compensatory time off (comp days) for any weekend travel
  • WORK ENVIRONMENT: 100% On-Site Laboratory & Field Commissioning | High-growth automation integrator with zero-monotony, custom engineering builds
  • CORE LOGIC STACK: Ground-up PLC/HMI development using Allen-Bradley / Rockwell Automation platforms (Studio 5000, RSLogix 5000, FactoryTalk)
  • PROJECT VARIETY: Custom automation, robotic cells, servo motion control, machine vision, and material handling systems
  • EDUCATION: Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Technology, Mechatronics, or Computer Science
  • REQUIREMENTS: US Citizen or Green Card holder residing within a comfortable daily commuting distance of the Greater Milwaukee / Washington County corridor

If you are a Controls Engineer tired of routine plant maintenance loops or repeatedly deploying identical machine templates, this direct-hire role offers a blank-screen engineering environment. Our client is a premier, rapidly growing automation systems integrator that has doubled its footprint year-over-year. Operating on a zero-monotony model, every project is a custom engineering challenge—spanning robotic cells, high-speed sorting networks, and multi-axis servo motion systems.

The company actively protects its engineering team with a strict, non-negotiable travel-balancing policy: if a customer startup requires weekend travel, you receive guaranteed comp days to enjoy extended time off upon return. You will take full project ownership, watch your code command massive physical machinery, and share directly in the company's financial success through profit sharing and bonuses.

What You Will Be Doing (Daily Responsibilities)
  • Design Scratch PLC/HMI Code: Develop robust PLC logic and intuitive HMI interfaces from scratch for complex, custom automation systems, material handling lines, and robotic cells.
  • Configure Motion & Vision Systems: Integrate multi-axis servo drives, EtherNet/IP communication protocols, machine safety architectures, and industrial vision platforms.
  • Review Electrical Schematics: Collaborate with CAD designers to review electrical schematics, verifying panel layouts against BOMs and safety regulations.
  • Champion Field Startups: Lead on-site customer startups and commissioning sequences (25%–50% domestic travel), ensuring seamless system integration.
  • Optional High-Level Integration: Incorporate C#, VB.NET, or SQL database connections for clients requiring enterprise-level data integration.
What We Are Looking For (Requirements & Qualifications)
  • 2+ years of controls engineering experience writing Allen-Bradley PLC logic (Studio 5000 / RSLogix) and HMI interfaces from scratch (not just editing existing code blocks).
  • Engineering Education: Associate or Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, or a related technical discipline.
  • Field Readiness & Balance: Ability to travel 25%–50% domestically for system commissioning, backed by guaranteed comp days for weekend field time.
  • Professional Longevity: A stable career history demonstrating multi-year tenure and commitment with prior employers.
  • Local Commute: US Citizen or Green Card holder residing within a comfortable commuting distance of the Greater Milwaukee / Washington County area.
Preferred Technical Assets (Bonus Skills)
  • Experience configuring multi-axis servo motion control or industrial vision hardware (Cognex, Keyence).
  • High-level software programming (C#, VB.NET) or relational database fluency (SQL).
  • Robot programming or path-teaching experience (FANUC, Yaskawa, ABB, KUKA).
