What does a junior machine learning engineer do?

As a junior machine learning engineer, you work in AI, performing research with algorithms and data modeling techniques. Machine learning involves using large collections of data to create systems that are capable of making predictions, and in this field, your duties and responsibilities revolve around using advanced mathematics to design applications for use in everything from stock trading to sports betting. Some machine learning efforts involve images, and this branch of the field is known as computer vision, while other techniques which focus on text are called natural language processing (NLP). Given these divisions, titles in machine learning include computer vision engineer, NLP scientist, or simply research scientist.

What kinds of projects and responsibilities can a junior machine learning engineer expect in their first year on the job?

As a Junior Machine Learning Engineer, you’ll typically work on tasks such as data preprocessing, building and testing simple models, and supporting more senior engineers in deploying machine learning solutions. Your responsibilities may also include cleaning datasets, implementing basic algorithms, and running experiments to evaluate model performance. You’ll often collaborate closely with data scientists, software engineers, and product teams to understand project goals and learn best practices. The role provides excellent opportunities to develop your technical skills, gain exposure to various stages of the ML pipeline, and gradually take on more complex projects as you grow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior machine learning engineer, and why are they important?

To succeed as a Junior Machine Learning Engineer, you need a solid grasp of programming (especially Python), foundational knowledge of algorithms and statistics, and a relevant degree in computer science, mathematics, or a related field. Familiarity with machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch and tools like scikit-learn, as well as experience with version control systems like Git, are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn from feedback are valuable soft skills that help you adapt and grow in the field. These skills ensure you can effectively develop, test, and improve machine learning models while collaborating with more experienced engineers and contributing to team projects.

Job description

Machine Tool Technician – Custom Machinery (1st Shift)

Up to $40.00/Hour + Overtime • Greater Milwaukee Area • 1st Shift

  • COMPENSATION: $30.00 – $40.00/Hour Starting Baseline (commensurate with machine building depth) + Premium Overtime Eligibility + Full Corporate Benefits Package
  • WORK SCHEDULE: Exclusive 1st Shift | Monday – Friday (7:00 AM – 3:30 PM) | Occasional field travel for system installations and customer site commissioning
  • TECHNICAL FOCUS: Precision mechanical assembly of custom, high-value, one-off automated manufacturing equipment, processing systems, robotics, and packaging machinery
  • SCHEMATIC LITERACY: Proven mastery reading and interpreting detailed mechanical blueprints, structural assembly drawings, and fluid power schematics
  • SHOP ENVIRONMENT: Clean, modern, highly collaborative team setting with dedicated space for complete machine builds and pre-shipment runoffs
  • REQUIREMENTS: US Citizen or Green Card holder residing within a comfortable daily commuting distance of the Greater Milwaukee / Waukesha County area

If you are a skilled mechanical specialist who takes pride in assembling complex, high-value systems from the ground up—rather than sitting at a bench performing repetitive production assembly—this direct-hire Machine Tool Technician seat offers the ideal professional home. Working with an established, highly respected regional custom machinery builder, you will assemble unique, one-of-a-kind manufacturing systems, processing equipment, and robotic cells for diverse industrial clients.

In this role, no two projects are identical. You will take full ownership of custom builds, working step-by-step from raw frames to fully integrated, precision machinery. Supported by a collaborative project team of engineers and technicians, you will refine mechanical fits, route fluid lines, and prepare advanced systems for client runoff and site installation.

What You Will Be Doing (Daily Responsibilities)
  • Assemble Custom Machinery: Build a wide variety of small to large, high-value, custom, one-off automated manufacturing equipment, processing systems, robotics, and packaging systems from the ground up.
  • Interpret Blueprints & Schematics: Read and interpret detailed mechanical drawings, blueprints, and assembly prints to determine exact tolerances, component layout, and operational sequences.
  • Execute Mechanical Alignment: Utilize hand/power tools and precision measuring equipment to connect, align, shim, and secure complex mechanical parts and sub-assemblies.
  • Install Cable & Fluid Lines: Mount and route electrical cables, pneumatic lines, and high-pressure hydraulic systems across active machine frames.
  • Troubleshoot & Team Collaboration: Partner closely with project engineering teams to diagnose mechanical fit issues, refine clearances, and resolve build roadblocks on active project floors.
  • Prepare Machinery for Shipment: Safely break down, label, and pack out completed custom automation cells and machinery for secure transport and client delivery.
  • Field Installation & Mentorship: Travel occasionally to client facilities for system installation and startup support while providing technical guidance and coaching to junior assemblers as needed.
  • Shop Maintenance & Safety: Maintain a clean, organized assembly bay adhering strictly to quality control benchmarks, safety guidelines, and 5S workplace standards.
What We Are Looking For (Requirements & Qualifications)
  • Proven Experience as a Machine Tool Technician, Custom Machine Builder, or Precision Mechanical Assembler working on industrial machinery or capital equipment.
  • Schematic & Drawing Mastery: Deep capability reading and executing complex multi-page mechanical assembly prints, submittals, and fluid power schematics.
  • Tool & Metrology Proficiency: Hands-on mastery of power/hand tools, precision measuring instruments (micrometers, dial indicators, calipers), and standard machine shop equipment.
  • Quality & Safety Mindset: High level of detail orientation regarding mechanical fits, sequence adherence, quality control, and safety protocols.
  • Travel Flexibility: Willingness for occasional travel to support on-site machine installations and field startups.
  • Employment Stability & Requirements: Reliable, steady work history demonstrating mechanical problem-solving ability; US Citizenship or Green Card required.
