What does a junior machine learning engineer do?

As a junior machine learning engineer, you work in AI, performing research with algorithms and data modeling techniques. Machine learning involves using large collections of data to create systems that are capable of making predictions, and in this field, your duties and responsibilities revolve around using advanced mathematics to design applications for use in everything from stock trading to sports betting. Some machine learning efforts involve images, and this branch of the field is known as computer vision, while other techniques which focus on text are called natural language processing (NLP). Given these divisions, titles in machine learning include computer vision engineer, NLP scientist, or simply research scientist.

What kinds of projects and responsibilities can a junior machine learning engineer expect in their first year on the job?

As a Junior Machine Learning Engineer, you’ll typically work on tasks such as data preprocessing, building and testing simple models, and supporting more senior engineers in deploying machine learning solutions. Your responsibilities may also include cleaning datasets, implementing basic algorithms, and running experiments to evaluate model performance. You’ll often collaborate closely with data scientists, software engineers, and product teams to understand project goals and learn best practices. The role provides excellent opportunities to develop your technical skills, gain exposure to various stages of the ML pipeline, and gradually take on more complex projects as you grow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior machine learning engineer, and why are they important?

To succeed as a Junior Machine Learning Engineer, you need a solid grasp of programming (especially Python), foundational knowledge of algorithms and statistics, and a relevant degree in computer science, mathematics, or a related field. Familiarity with machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch and tools like scikit-learn, as well as experience with version control systems like Git, are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn from feedback are valuable soft skills that help you adapt and grow in the field. These skills ensure you can effectively develop, test, and improve machine learning models while collaborating with more experienced engineers and contributing to team projects.

What is the difference between Junior Machine Learning Engineer vs Data Scientist?

Job description

About Us
Foundation is developing the future of general purpose robotics with the goal to address the labor shortage.
Our mission is to create advanced robots that can operate in complex environments, reducing human risk in conflict zones and enhancing efficiency in labor-intensive industries.
We are on the lookout for extraordinary engineers and scientists to join our team. Your previous experience in robotics isn't a prerequisite - it's your talent and determination that truly count.
We expect that many of our team members will bring diverse perspectives from various industries and fields. We are looking for individuals with a proven record of exceptional ability and a history of creating things that work.
Our Culture:
We like to be frank and honest about who we are, so that people can decide for themselves if this is a culture they resonate with. Please read more about our culture here https://foundation.bot/culture.
Who should join:
  • You like working in person with a team.
  • You deeply believe that this is the most important mission for humanity and needs to happen yesterday.
  • You are highly technical - regardless of the role you are in. We are building technology; you need to understand technology well.
  • You care about aesthetics and design inside out. If it's not the best product ever, it bothers you, and you need to "fix" it.
  • You don't need someone to motivate you; you get things done.

Why We Are Hiring for This Role:
SHIFT: 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM
This role is a bit unique: right now, you'll be performing the physical tasks that our humanoid robots will eventually take over. As our robots come online, you'll transition into operating and monitoring them directly. In the meantime, you're essentially doing the job the robot will one day do, giving you a front-row seat to how the technology evolves.
  • Perform the manual tasks currently required in the production process, which will eventually be handled by humanoid robots.
  • As robots are deployed, transition into operating them in a manufacturing environment, including using the control panel when required.
  • Monitor robot performance during production to ensure consistent operation.
  • Perform basic autonomous maintenance on humanoid robots (cleaning, inspections, routine checks) as they come online.
  • Identify and troubleshoot minor operational issues; escalate complex problems to engineering or maintenance teams.
  • Follow all safety procedures and company standards to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Collaborate with supervisors, engineers, and technicians to support smooth production flow.

What Kind of Person We Are Looking For:
If you have a college degree, are a hard worker, and are sharp and quick to learn, this could be a great opportunity for you, even without direct robotics experience.
  • College degree preferred; motivated candidates with a strong work ethic and quick learning ability are encouraged to apply.
  • Prior experience operating manufacturing equipment, robotic systems, or automated machinery is a plus, but not required.
  • Strong understanding of, or willingness to learn, industrial safety practices and compliance requirements.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance, adjustments, and inspections.
  • Solid problem-solving and communication skills for effective reporting and escalation.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical, electrical, or mechatronic systems is a plus.

What We Offer:
  • Competitive pay with full benefits
  • Equity/stock
  • A front-row opportunity to grow alongside our humanoid robotics program, from manual operations to robot supervision

Working Conditions:
  • Requires standing, walking, and performing physical tasks for extended periods.
  • Full-time, on-site role in a manufacturing setting.

Benefits:
We provide market standard benefits (health, vision, dental, 401k, etc.). Join us for the culture and the mission, not for the benefits.
Salary:
The annual compensation is expected to be between $50,000-55,000. Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location.
