A Junior Linux Kernel Engineer assists in developing, maintaining, and debugging the Linux kernel, which is the core part of the Linux operating system. Their responsibilities often include writing and testing kernel modules, fixing bugs, and contributing to kernel updates under the guidance of senior engineers. They may also help in troubleshooting hardware compatibility and optimizing system performance. This role often requires strong programming skills in C and familiarity with Linux systems and tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Junior Linux Kernel Engineer, and why are they important?

A Junior Linux Kernel Engineer should have a solid understanding of C programming, operating system fundamentals, and computer architecture, typically supported by a relevant degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with Linux kernel development tools like Git, GCC, GDB, and patch submission processes, as well as knowledge of version control and debugging tools, is essential. Job description

Senior Linux Infrastructure Engineer - Azure Government / CMMC (Contract)

Location: Spring, TX (Hybrid - 3 days onsite Tue-Thu, remote Mon/Fri)
Type: W2 Contract (12+ months, likely to extend)
Citizenship: U.S. citizenship required (government environment - no sponsorship, no clearance required)

About the Role

A well-established organization in the maritime sector is standing up a brand-new Azure Government (GCC High) environment from the ground up, and is looking for a senior Linux engineer to lead the build. This is a project-focused engineering role (roughly 90% build, 10% operational support) - not a ticket-queue administration seat. You'll architect and provision the new government-side Linux infrastructure, implement and verify STIGs, and help drive the organization's CMMC compliance initiative. You'll also write the standards and documentation the rest of the team follows, and mentor junior engineers along the way.

If building a secure environment correctly from day one is more interesting to you than maintaining someone else's, this role is built for that.

What You'll Do

  • Architect, provision, and harden new Oracle Linux and RHEL infrastructure in Azure Government (GCC High)

  • Implement and verify STIG hardening; support weekly vulnerability reviews and remediation

  • Support the organization's CMMC compliance initiative and align infrastructure to NIST 800-171

  • Build automation for provisioning, configuration, and patch management (Ansible and similar)

  • Author standards, procedures, and implementation documentation

  • Mentor junior Linux engineers and collaborate daily across cybersecurity, enterprise architecture, network, cloud, and application teams

Must-Have Qualifications

  • Senior-level Linux administration, especially RHEL and/or Oracle Linux

  • Hands-on Microsoft Azure experience (infrastructure provisioning, not just identity administration)

  • STIG implementation and verification experience

  • Working knowledge of NIST 800-171 and CMMC

  • Experience building and hardening infrastructure in secure or regulated government environments

  • Strong documentation skills

  • U.S. citizenship

Nice to Have

  • Azure Government / GCC High experience specifically

  • Terraform, Ansible, or other infrastructure automation

  • NetApp familiarity

  • Experience mentoring or leading within an infrastructure team

Environment

Hybrid commercial and government infrastructure (~1,000 Linux servers total, ~130 on the government side). Government environment is fully cloud-based; the new build is greenfield. Collaborative team culture that values engineers who ask questions, follow process, and work cross-functionally - not lone wolves.
