What does a junior Java software engineer do?

A Junior Java Software Engineer is typically responsible for assisting in the development, testing, and maintenance of software applications using the Java programming language. They work under the guidance of more experienced engineers to write code, fix bugs, and contribute to team projects. Junior engineers also learn best practices in software development, participate in code reviews, and continuously improve their technical skills. Their role often includes collaborating with other developers, designers, and quality assurance teams to deliver high-quality software solutions.

What kinds of projects or tasks can a junior Java software engineer expect to work on during their first year?

As a Junior Java Software Engineer, you can expect to work on tasks such as fixing bugs, writing unit tests, and developing small features under the guidance of more experienced team members. You'll likely contribute to code reviews, participate in daily stand-ups, and collaborate closely with QA engineers and front-end developers. Over time, you may gradually take on more complex assignments, such as designing modules or integrating third-party APIs. This hands-on experience helps build your technical skills and deepen your understanding of the software development lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior Java software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Java Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of Java programming, object-oriented principles, data structures, and typically a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, build tools such as Maven or Gradle, and experience with IDEs like IntelliJ IDEA or Eclipse are common technical requirements. Strong problem-solving, eagerness to learn, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure you can write reliable code, collaborate efficiently, and adapt to evolving technical challenges in software development projects.

What is the difference between Junior Java Software Engineer vs Java Developer?

Job description

Back-end Software Development Engineer #1060508
Job Description:
  • At our company, we're not just building vehicles—we're redefining the future of connected mobility.
  • The Device Connectivity Platform Engineering team sits at the core of this transformation, powering the sophisticated Connected Vehicle Cloud Platform that supports over 26 million vehicles worldwide and over 50 billion data points daily —and growing every day.
  • As a Software Engineer on the device connectivity layer, you will play a key role in shaping the next generation of connected ecosystem.
  • We are looking for a highly motivated, technology focused individual with a passion to work on a collaborative software delivery team to enable the creation and management of Platforms and APIs deployed to the mobility ecosystem.

Skills Required:
  • Java would be used to design and build RESTful and gRPC based microservices with Spring Boot.
  • These Java applications would be packaged as Docker containers and deployed to Kubernetes/EKS clusters, with health-check endpoints and readiness/liveness probes to support reliable orchestration at scale.
  • For real-time data processing, Java-based Kafka producers and consumers would handle streams of vehicle connectivity events. gRPC services would enable low-latency internal service-to-service communication alongside standard REST controllers for external-facing APIs.
  • Security would be built into these services using OAuth2/JWT-based authentication and authorization.
  • Throughout development, the engineer would follow TDD practices, plus integration tests to ensure clean, maintainable, well-tested code, and would instrument services with metrics and logging to support monitoring, alerting, and performance/load testing under high vehicle-connection volumes, given the mission-critical, 24x7 nature of the platform.

Skills Preferred:
  • AWS would serve as the core cloud infrastructure platform for deploying, scaling, and operating the connected vehicle services.
  • Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) would host containerized microservices, with AWS-native tooling supporting autoscaling, load balancing, and networking to ensure resilient operation under high vehicle-connection volumes.
  • Services would leverage other AWS offerings, such as S3 for storage, RDS for managed PostgreSQL databases, and IAM for fine-grained access control, to build a secure, observable, and highly available platform.
  • Infrastructure as code would be a core discipline, with Terraform used to provision all AWS resources, ensuring consistent, repeatable, and auditable environments.
  • CI/CD pipelines would leverage Concourse to automate build, test, static/dependency scanning (SonarQube, FOSSA), and deployment, with ArgoCD handling GitOps-based continuous deployment to EKS clusters for automated, auditable, and rollback-capable releases.
  • Given the mission-critical, 24x7 nature of the platform, AWS services would be architected with redundancy, monitoring, and alerting to minimize downtime and support rapid incident response for vehicle connectivity at scale.

Experience Required:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field Master's degree desirable
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in cloud-based, software development.

Experience Preferred:
Functional/Technical Skills/Competencies
  • Proven experience in designing, deploying, and supporting cloud-based solutions in production environments.
  • Strong understanding of API design and integration methods for seamless systems and data exchange.
  • Solid knowledge of cloud security principles and the ability to implement secure software solutions.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting mission-critical, always-on applications with high reliability and performance standards.
  • Hands-on expertise with AWS platforms and cloud-native tools such as MSK, Tyk, DataDog, EKS/Kubernetes, and Terraform, as well as deployment pipelines like Cloud Build, ArgoCD and Tekton.
  • Proficient in canary deployments and API-related technologies including JSON, REST, Swagger, and Postman.
  • Experience supporting critical applications in an "always on" environment.

Education Required:
  • Bachelor's Degree

Education Preferred:
  • Master's Degree

Additional Information:
Key Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, maintain, & support mission-critical cloud platform components that power connected vehicle ecosystem.
  • Build & enhance platform services & APIs that enable secure, reliable, & scalable connectivity for more than 27 million connected vehicles worldwide.

  • Own features & services throughout the software lifecycle, from design & implementation through deployment, monitoring, & operational support.
  • Partner with engineers, architects, & product teams to deliver solutions that improve customer experiences & advance connected mobility vision.
  • Key Traits Software Engineering Expertise: Experience designing, developing, & operating distributed systems, microservices, & cloud-native applications using Java, Spring Boot, Kubernetes/EKS, Kafka, PostgreSQL, gRPC, REST, & AWS Cloud & DevOps
