What Does a Junior Java Developer Do?

Junior Java developers are entry-level programmers who are part of a team of coders and developers. They work on both front-end and back-end codes to build an application. Being a junior Java developer requires extensive knowledge of coding and the program language JavaScript to develop and troubleshoot products. As a junior Java developer, you run tests to pinpoint errors, migrate code and data, and ensure the program is integrated with other company developments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Junior Java Developer, and why are they important?

A Junior Java Developer should have a solid understanding of Java programming, object-oriented principles, and basic software development concepts, often supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp. Familiarity with tools such as IntelliJ IDEA or Eclipse, version control systems like Git, and frameworks like Spring Boot is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are important soft skills in this role. These competencies enable efficient code development, smooth collaboration, and the ability to quickly adapt to new technologies and project requirements.

What are some common challenges a Junior Java Developer might face during their first year, and how can they overcome them?

Junior Java Developers often encounter challenges such as understanding large codebases, adapting to agile development processes, and managing task priorities. Junior Java Developers usually have foundational knowledge of Java and related technologies, and they are eager to develop their skills through hands-on experience.

Will AI replace Java devs?

Job#: 3035501
Job Description:
Sr. Java Developer
Location: Durham, North Carolina (Hybrid)
Employment Type: Contract to Perm
Role Overview
This position is for a mid-to-senior Java Developer to join a modernization initiative for critical laboratory systems. The role involves approximately 70% hands-on backend development and 30% architectural design within a hybrid-remote setting. You will contribute to migrating legacy platforms to a modern Java, Spring Boot, and AWS stack, focusing on histology applications. This is an opportunity to evolve a complex, high-dependency system while mentoring other engineers and promoting engineering excellence.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and deploy RESTful microservices using Java 11-21 and Spring Boot on AWS.
  • Provide technical leadership in design reviews, solution patterns, and architectural decisions for a brownfield system.
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to translate lab workflows into scalable and reliable services.
  • Promote engineering best practices, including code quality, testing discipline, observability, and secure coding.
  • Mentor other engineers on design choices, code reviews, and modern Java practices.
  • Champion the use of AI-augmented development tools to improve productivity.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies and contribute to continuous process improvement.
Required Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent practical experience.
Experience: 6-7+ years of professional backend Java development experience building enterprise-grade systems. Experience working in brownfield environments, evolving existing platforms, and managing complex dependencies is required.
Technical Skills:
  • Strong proficiency in Java (versions 11-21) and Spring Boot.
  • Hands-on AWS experience is required, with knowledge of services such as Lambda, S3, SQS, API Gateway, and ECS/EKS.
  • Experience with messaging systems such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, or SQS.
  • Solid understanding of microservices architecture.
  • Proficiency with CI/CD pipelines using tools like Jenkins, Maven/Gradle, Git, and SonarQube.
  • Understanding of application security principles (e.g., Spring Security, OAuth 2.0).
  • Proficiency with SQL (Postgres/Oracle) and familiarity with NoSQL (DynamoDB) datastores.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude, Cursor, Codex).
  • Knowledge of containerization platforms like Docker, Kubernetes, or OpenShift.
  • Experience with Test-Driven Development (TDD) using JUnit 5 and Mockito.
  • Familiarity with APM tools (AppDynamics, Dynatrace, Datadog) and log aggregation platforms (Splunk, ELK).
  • Experience in the healthcare or LIMS domain.
