A Junior Geotechnical Engineer is an entry-level professional who assists in analyzing soil, rock, and groundwater conditions to support construction and infrastructure projects. They conduct field investigations, collect and test soil samples, and help prepare geotechnical reports. They work under the supervision of senior engineers to assess site stability, foundation design, and earthworks. Their role ensures that structures are built on safe, stable ground, minimizing risks related to soil failure or environmental impact.
As a Junior Geotechnical Engineer, you will typically assist with site investigations, soil sampling, laboratory testing, and preparing technical reports to support a variety of civil engineering projects such as foundations, roads, and retaining structures. Your daily tasks may include fieldwork, data analysis, drafting technical drawings, and working alongside senior engineers, construction teams, and clients. You will often collaborate within multidisciplinary teams, gaining exposure to different project stages and learning best practices from experienced professionals. This hands-on, varied work environment provides an excellent foundation for career growth in the geotechnical field.
To thrive as a Junior Geotechnical Engineer, you need a foundational understanding of soil mechanics, geology, and engineering principles, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in civil or geotechnical engineering. Familiarity with relevant software such as AutoCAD, GeoStudio, and field testing equipment, as well as having or working towards certifications like EIT (Engineer in Training), is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and collaborative communication help set candidates apart. These skills ensure accurate site assessments, effective teamwork, and quality project outcomes in geotechnical engineering projects.

Description
As a Senior Geotechnical Engineer, you will play a key role in delivering high-impact geotechnical and performance-based design projects. This role offers a unique opportunity to lead, mentor, and grow a team engaged in some of our most advanced analytical work. You'll collaborate proactively with internal and external partners to develop innovative solutions to complex geotechnical challenges, contributing to the technical direction of the group.Â
A strong background in seismic design and earthquake engineering is essential. You'll take ownership of key project activities, including developing conceptual and numerical models, managing project schedules, writing technical reports, supporting client relationships, coordinating subsurface exploration programs, and overseeing construction observation. Your leadership will help drive the group's long-term technical development and elevate the sophistication of our performance-based design capabilities.Â
Typical projects span complex geotechnical applications, including liquefaction and seismic slope stability evaluations, ground improvement design, and dynamic nonlinear deformation analyses of temporary and permanent shored excavations in dense urban environments alongside a steady mix of conventional geotechnical engineering work. From foundations and retaining structures to earthwork, pavements, and construction-phase support, you'll contribute across the full spectrum of our practice. While responsibilities vary by project, leadership, technical rigor, and collaborative problem-solving will remain at the core of your work. This role can be performed out of our Seattle, San Diego, or Redmond office.Â
