Overview / Responsibilities

Wood has a full time employment opportunity for a Junior Vegetation and Wetland Ecologist, based in Saskatchewan (Regina or Saskatoon). The Ecologist must be experienced with western Canada plant communities and species. The successful candidate should expect to spend time in the field, including work in remote locations.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will work within the Environment and Regulatory Team under the supervision of the Discipline Lead. Primary responsibilities will be to provide support on a wide variety of projects as delegated by the Discipline Lead. This will involve the following:

  • Conducting field surveys for vegetation including rare plant and vegetation species and community inventory surveys.
  • Vegetation and wetland mapping.
  • Air photo interpretation.
  • Wetland field assessments, functional assessments, and field and map-based delineations.
  • Conducting wetland classifications in accordance with Stewart and Kantrud (1971) Classification System
  • Conducting impact assessment and mitigation/compensation planning and support. 
Skills / Qualifications

Requirements:

The position requires that the successful candidate has a solid technical and/or academic background.

Key requirements include:

  • Education: B.Sc. or Diploma and/or advance degree in appropriate discipline (e.g., biology, environmental science, botany, vegetation ecology).
  • 2 or more years of professional environmental consulting experience.
  • Experience with vegetation species identification, wetland surveys and associated field survey protocols.
  • Ability to work well in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience using GPS handheld units to navigate and to capture data.
  • Experience with proposal writing and budget maintenance.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Experience with impact assessment and associated reporting, and mitigation and compensation planning are an asset.
  • Class 5 Driver's License valid for use in Saskatchewan
  • Experience preparing regulatory applications under the Saskatchewan Environmental Management and Protection Act, 2010 would be an asset
  • Experience with ArcGIS is an asset.
