What is a junior embedded?

Junior Embedded Engineers are entry-level professionals who design, develop, and maintain embedded systems—specialized computing systems that perform dedicated functions within larger mechanical or electrical systems. They typically work with microcontrollers, real-time operating systems, and hardware interfaces to ensure devices like automotive systems, medical instruments, or consumer electronics function reliably. Junior Embedded Engineers usually support senior engineers, write code in languages such as C or C++, and assist in debugging and testing embedded software. Their role is crucial in integrating hardware and software to create efficient, reliable products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior embedded engineer?

To thrive as a Junior Embedded Engineer, you need a solid understanding of embedded systems, C/C++ programming, and basic electronics, often backed by a degree in electrical engineering or computer science. Familiarity with microcontrollers, debugging tools, and version control systems like Git is typically required. Problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies enable the development, testing, and optimization of reliable embedded solutions in collaborative engineering environments.

What are some typical challenges a junior embedded engineer may face when starting in this role?

As a Junior Embedded Engineer, you may find it challenging to work with complex hardware-software integration, particularly if you are new to debugging low-level code or working with unfamiliar microcontrollers. Collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams—such as hardware engineers, firmware developers, and QA testers—also requires strong communication skills and adaptability. Additionally, learning to use specialized development tools and managing strict project timelines are common hurdles, but these challenges also provide valuable learning opportunities and help you build a solid foundation for career advancement.

You will also work cross-functionally with various teams, bringing creative problem-solving and fresh perspectives to the design, development, and optimization of advanced embedded systems.

The ideal candidate can demonstrate deep knowledge of Android-based products and Embedded Android/AOSP environments to effectively manage Shure devices, support system functionality, and drive the development of reliable, high-performing embedded solutions.

This role is based in our Niles, IL headquarters and will be hybrid.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop and test software for embedded Android based products with focus on standard networking protocols for managing Shure devices and supporting system functionality
  • Tailor and build custom Android OS (AOSP) images, working closely with SoC board support packages (BSPs) and HAL layer integrations.
  • Write, optimize, and maintain low-level C/C++ native code, JNI bindings, and custom Android HALs (Hardware Abstraction Layers) to interface with peripheral devices and sensors.
  • Build key system services, background processes, and high-performance applications in Kotlin and Java.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex system issues, including memory leaks, thread contention, power consumption, boot-time optimization, and driver interactions.
  • Work as part of a cross-functional development team to design and implement cutting edge audio products and technologies
  • Estimate, organize, and document tasks
  • Practice established software development methodologies and principles focusing on separation of concerns, re-usability, maintainability, minimized complexity, high cohesion and low coupling
  • Model designs using UML and related methods; develop use cases to model real-time systems behavior
  • Architect maintainable system designs
  • Review the design and code developed by peer engineers
  • More senior engineers will mentor junior and entry-level staff members
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • BS degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or Computer Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum 4 years of embedded software development experience with at least two years focused on Embedded Android/AOSP

  • Hands-on experience with AOSP build systems (Soong, Ninja, Android.bp, Android.mk), Android HAL architecture (HIDL/AIDL), system services, and Linux kernel drivers/interfaces.
  • Experience using the Android NDK, JNI development, and IPC mechanisms (Binder, Sockets, Shared Memory).
  • Proficiency with Git, Linux command-line tools, Android Studio, ADB, and debugging tools (GDB, Valgrind, Systrace/Perfetto).
  • Experience solving problems following SOLID and OO design principles
  • Demonstrated expertise with debugging using protocol analyzers, Wireshark, etc.
  • Experience with software version control and release
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to analyze complex interdependent variables
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills

    • Experience with custom board bring-up on ARM architecture (e.g., Qualcomm, NXP, Rockchip).
    • Hands-on knowledge of hardware protocols like UART, I2C, SPI, GPIO, USB, and Bluetooth/BLE.
    • Exposure to automated testing for embedded devices and CI/CD pipelines tailored for hardware/AOSP.
    • Knowledge of Android security architectures (SELinux policies, trustzones, secure boot).
