What is the difference between Junior Embedded System Engineer vs Embedded Software Developer?

AspectJunior Embedded System EngineerEmbedded Software Developer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fieldsBachelor's in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related fields
Work EnvironmentDesigning, testing, and debugging embedded hardware and firmwareWriting, testing, and maintaining embedded software applications
Industry UsageManufacturing, automotive, consumer electronicsConsumer electronics, IoT devices, industrial automation

Both roles often require similar educational backgrounds and work in embedded systems, but Junior Embedded System Engineers focus more on hardware integration and firmware development, while Embedded Software Developers concentrate on software programming and application development within embedded environments.

What is a junior embedded system engineer?

Junior Embedded System Engineers are entry-level professionals who design, develop, test, and maintain embedded systems—specialized computing systems that are part of larger devices, such as cars, medical devices, or household appliances. They typically work with both hardware and software, writing code for microcontrollers and troubleshooting electronic circuits. Junior engineers usually work under the supervision of senior engineers, gaining hands-on experience and building their expertise in embedded technology. Their work often involves programming in languages like C or C++, using debugging tools, and collaborating with cross-functional teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior embedded system engineer?

To thrive as a Junior Embedded System Engineer, you need a solid grounding in electronics, programming (typically C/C++), and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with microcontrollers, real-time operating systems (RTOS), and development tools such as oscilloscopes, debuggers, and IDEs is commonly required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure successful hardware-software integration, efficient problem-solving, and the ability to contribute effectively to complex engineering projects.

What are some common challenges faced by junior embedded system engineers during their first year on the job?

Junior Embedded System Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to complex hardware-software integration, managing limited system resources, and debugging real-time issues. They may also need to quickly familiarize themselves with proprietary development tools and learn to work within strict project deadlines. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as hardware designers and firmware developers, is essential and may require strong communication skills to ensure project goals are met efficiently.

Job description

About Voyis

Voyis designs and manufactures high performance underwater optical sensors (lasers, cameras, lights)for underwater vehicles that expand capability and enhance understanding in underwater surveys and exploration. Our products have enabled our customers to survey more than 10,000km of ocean floor across all 7 continents, helping people better understand those remote, challenging environments.

Our mission is to push the limits of what’s possible subsea and enable every underwater vehicle to see the depths like we see the surface. All our products are proudly designed and built in Waterloo.

The Role

As an Embedded Systems Test Engineer at Voyis, you will play a critical role in improving how we automate, test, validate, and release the software that powers our underwater camera and laser systems.

You will drive and own quality across the full Voyis stack by validating entire systems including embedded compute, real-time sensor hardware and backend services – all with a focus on building test automation. The role is heavily focused on integration level testing and ensuring release reliability across the range of SW/FW/HW configurations in our core products. You will also contribute to validating utility libraries and internal tools that support both software development and production operations, including calibration, data management, and device maintenance.

Experience & Core Competencies

  • 8+ years of experience in test automation, embedded systems validation, and systems integration testing in safety-critical or hardware-centric product environments (e.g., automotive, industrial, robotics, sensors)
  • Proven track record architecting and building HIL test platforms from the ground up
  • Advanced embedded systems background: firmware on ARM Cortex platforms, peripheral-level debugging, and board bring-up — able to test at the level the firmware is written
  • Strong development skills in C/C++, and scripting languages such as Python, disciplined use of git, and professional software development standards
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers, leading peer reviews, and establishing team-wide testing standards and processes

WhatYou’llDo

  • Own the end-to-end test strategy for Voyis products — defining and implementing manual and automated approaches spanning functional, regression, integration, performance, fault-injection, and compatibility testing
  • Architect, build, and continuously improve HIL test environments that validate software and firmware directly on physical sensors and embedded systems
  • Develop monitoring and observability services to track mission-critical metrics — system latency, data throughput, data integrity — ensuring high-fidelity real-time visualization and sensor accuracy
  • Lead root cause analysis on escaped defects using structured techniques, reproduce issues in controlled test environments, and strengthen automated coverage to prevent recurrence
  • Mentor and develop junior QA engineers
  • Champion a quality-first engineering culture, partnering with firmware, software, and hardware teams to shift testing left and build testability into designs from the start

Nice to Have

  • Experience designing and maintaining CI/CD-integrated firmware and software regression pipelines (GitLab), including structured test case libraries, pass/fail criteria, coverage tracking, and reporting dashboards (Prometheus, Grafana)
  • Experience setting up and managing self-hosted runners and platform matrix builds (Linux x64/arm64,Windows)
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker,Buildah)
  • Experience with infrastructure as code (Ansible, etc.)including playbooks, roles, and automation workflows
  • Hands-on hardware testing experience with some debugging knowledge using an oscilloscope or multimeter
  • Comfortable with Linux and/or Windows systems administration and debugging infrastructure issues

Work Location

This is primarily an in-person role based at our Waterloo headquarters. Some flexibility for remote work is available; however, fully in person is preferred and a minimum of four days on-site is expected to support close collaboration with the team who is nearly full time in office.

The Perks

  • 5 weeks of total time off, flexible work hours and a dedication to a work-life balance.
  • Employee-directed personal education funds to drive continuous learning
  • Profit-sharing within to celebrate our successes together
  • Regular company-wide social events
  • Health and vision benefits
  • RRSP Matching

The Pay

This opening is for an active vacancy. The salary range for this role is $95,000 to $130,000 dependent on skillset and experience.

Why Join Voyis

Voyis is a small, highly capable team of engineers and problem-solvers building technology used in some of the world’s most demanding environments. Our work has supported expeditions to iconic sites such as the Titanic and Endurance, and every team member has a visible impact on both our products and our customers.

This posting is intended to fill an existing vacancy. Applications are reviewed by our team and we may use artificial intelligence (AI) to assist in screening or assessing candidates. This role requires legal authorization to work in Canada without sponsorship.
