Job Description
AECOM is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join our Buildings & Places Electrical Engineering team. This role is intended to strengthen the senior technical depth of the Roanoke-area practice and provide design leadership, mentorship, and client-facing expertise across a diverse portfolio of building projects.
The Senior Electrical Engineer will serve as a technical leader and trusted problem-solver, applying sound engineering judgment across projects that range from small local facilities to large, complex, multi-building campuses. Approximately 80% of our work supports U.S. Department of Defense and other government clients, with projects spanning domestic and global locations.
This position is ideal for an experienced engineer who enjoys leading designs, mentoring developing staff, collaborating closely with architects and other disciplines, and continuously improving engineering processes and workflows. The successful candidate will be comfortable operating with minimal oversight, bringing forward ideas and solutions that improve efficiency, quality, and consistency across the team.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Design & Engineering Leadership
  • Lead electrical design efforts for building projects of varying size and complexity, including commercial, industrial, higher education, wastewater, and federal/DoD facilities.
  • Develop and oversee designs for medium- and low-voltage power distribution systems, lighting systems, grounding and lightning protection, and associated low-voltage building systems.
  • Apply strong architectural engineering judgment, coordinating closely with architectural, structural, mechanical, and technology disciplines to deliver fully integrated building designs.
  • Prepare and review electrical calculations, including load calculations, voltage drop, short circuit, protective device coordination, lightning protection risk assessment, and arc flash analyses.
  • Develop lighting designs and photometric analyses appropriate to project requirements.
  • Produce and review one-line diagrams, equipment layouts, panel schedules, cable schedules, and related construction documents.
  • Develop technical specifications and contribute to construction cost estimates.

Project Execution & Client Engagement
  • Serve as the electrical discipline lead on assigned projects, coordinating schedules, budgets, and deliverables in collaboration with Project Managers.
  • Participate in client meetings, technical workshops, and design reviews, representing AECOM as a senior technical professional.
  • Apply engineering judgment to resolve design challenges, scope changes, and constructability issues across all phases of design and construction.
  • Adapt effectively to projects with varying levels of definition, from early concept through final construction documents.

Construction Phase Support
  • Support projects during construction through review of submittals, responses to RFIs, and field coordination.
  • Utilize construction administration platforms for submittal review, RFI tracking, and construction coordination.
  • Participate in site visits, commissioning activities, and start-up support as required.
  • Ensure designs are implemented in accordance with contract documents, codes, and applicable standards.

Quality, Mentorship & Process Improvement
  • Perform quality control reviews of electrical designs prepared by other engineers and designers.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers, supporting their professional growth and development.
  • Serve as a senior technical resource within the electrical group, providing insight on codes, standards, and best practices.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve internal design processes, workflows, tools, and standards, and collaborate with leadership to implement solutions.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of design procedures that promote consistency, efficiency, and high-quality deliverables.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree (B.S.) in Electrical Engineering from an accredited program.
  • 8+ years of professional electrical engineering design experience.
  • Strong experience with Revit and/or AutoCAD for building design.
  • U.S. Citizenship (required due to the nature of federal/DoD projects).
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel occasionally.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred.
  • Experience leading electrical design for multidisciplinary building projects.
  • Strong working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).
  • Working knowledge of NFPA and IEEE standards applicable to building and power systems.
  • Familiarity with Department of Defense (DoD) building codes and Unified Facilities Criteria (UFCs)
  • Experience performing power system studies using SKM (preferred), ETAP, or EasyPower.
  • Experience with AGi32 or similar lighting analysis software.
  • Familiarity with Procore or other construction administration platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring junior engineers and performing formal QA/QC reviews.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including client-facing communication.
