What is a junior developer operations engineer?

Junior Developer Operations Engineers, often called Junior DevOps Engineers, are entry-level professionals who assist in bridging the gap between software development and IT operations. They help automate processes, manage deployment pipelines, and monitor systems to ensure reliability and efficiency. Their responsibilities typically include writing scripts, managing cloud infrastructure, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating with development and operations teams to improve workflows. As juniors, they work under the guidance of senior DevOps engineers and are often learning new tools and practices on the job.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior developer operations engineer?

To thrive as a Junior Developer Operations Engineer, you need a foundational understanding of software development, system administration, and networking, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools like Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure, as well as basic scripting knowledge, is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with software and IT teams. These skills are crucial for ensuring seamless software deployment, system reliability, and efficient team workflows.

What are some common challenges faced by junior developer operations engineers when transitioning from development or IT roles?

Junior DevOps Engineers often encounter challenges such as mastering automation tools (like Jenkins, Docker, or Ansible), adapting to rapid deployment cycles, and learning to troubleshoot complex system integrations. Additionally, the shift to a collaborative workflow—working closely with both developers and IT operations—can require developing strong communication skills and a proactive approach to problem-solving. Joining Allocore means being part of a mission-driven team that values innovation, collaboration, and a commitment to excellence. If you thrive in high-pressure environments where urgency meets creativity and where every challenge is an opportunity to create impact, then continue reading....
We are seeking a Senior Cloud Operations Engineer who will leverage a strong understanding of the organization’s cloud infrastructure, operational processes, and engineering best practices to help ensure our platforms remain secure, highly available, and efficient. With your experience supporting and evolving cloud environments, you will plan and execute maintenance activities, infrastructure upgrades, and migrations to updated architectures, while partnering closely with the cloud engineering team on more advanced operational and engineering initiatives to improve reliability, automation, observability, and operational excellence.
You will contribute towards providing high quality, timely support to both internal and external users of our platforms. While you will directly respond to and resolve some tickets submitted by the rest of the organization and contacts from third parties for issues and requests associated with our cloud infrastructure, you will play an important role in coordinating, guiding, and mentoring the Cloud Operations Specialist(s) to accomplish the bulk of this work. Your efforts to develop the Cloud Operations Specialist(s) by providing technical direction, escalation handling, systemic improvements, and repeatable processes/runbooks will ensure efficient support and maintenance operations, helping the team scale as additional projects and customers are added in the future.
You will perform code deployments, hotfixes, and major releases in collaboration with the operations and development teams, working to improve reliability and repeatability. You will also assist in responding to production incidents and outages, providing clear, proactive communication while they are occurring and effective reporting after resolution, contributing to root-cause analysis and follow-up remediation. Your work will be closely coordinated with the cloud and data engineering teams.
As cloud operations involve not just maintaining servers but also working with serverless applications in the cloud, some coding and development may be needed. In this role, you will support all aspects of our build and AWS deployment environments, including scaling, provisioning, monitoring, and automation.
Key Responsibilities
  • Planning and executing maintenance activities, upgrades, and migrations on our cloud infrastructure to keep our platforms secure, highly available, and aligned with best practices.
  • Coordinating, guiding, and mentoring the Cloud Operations Specialist(s) by providing technical direction, establishing repeatable processes/runbooks, and ensuring efficient support and maintenance operations, helping the team scale as additional projects and customers are added in the future.
  • Participating in support and request fulfillment related to cloud infrastructure, with a focus on escalation handling, complex troubleshooting, and systemic improvements to reduce recurring issues.
  • Working closely with cloud architects and engineers to identify, implement, and operationalize optimal cloud-based solutions for our customers, including assisting with engineering efforts where appropriate (e.g. automation, infrastructure improvements, and reliability enhancements).
  • Performing code deployments, hotfixes, and major releases in collaboration with the operations and development teams, working to improve reliability and repeatability.
  • Responding to production incidents and outages, providing clear, proactive communication while they are occurring and effective reporting after resolution, contributing to root-cause analysis and follow-up remediation.
  • Following applicable security guidelines and best practices to perform effective ongoing management of cloud environments.
  • Optimizing observability frameworks (e.g. Datadog, Sentry) to drive automation of detection, alerting, and remediation workflows.
  • Educating other teams on cloud-based solutions and providing associated training as required.
  • Employing exceptional problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot issues before they snowball into more significant problems.
  • Helping to build highly available web services in the cloud.
  • Introducing innovative ideas and technologies so that we can stay on the cutting edge.
  • Communicating technical information to both developers and business stakeholders.

Qualifications
  • U.S. citizenship is required. Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
  • 4 years of experience in IT, with at least 2 years of hands-on AWS experience
  • Bachelor’s degree (additional 2 years of relevant experience can be substituted for a degree)
  • Flexibility to work outside business hours for code deployments and maintenance activities as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or IT
  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate and/or AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer – Associate certifications
  • 2+ years of experience with systems administration and support in AWS
  • 2+ years of experience providing enterprise Linux-based systems administration
  • 2+ years of experience in a SaaS environment
  • 1+ year of experience with Terraform or CloudFormation, Elastic Kubernetes Service, Docker, and GitHub
  • 1+ year of experience with Incident Management and Response
