Job description

Senior Planner SchedulerReporting to the Project Controls Manager, the primary purpose of the Senior Planner/Scheduler is to lead the planning and scheduling function for large, complex projects or multiple smaller projects. This role is responsible for developing, maintaining, and monitoring detailed project schedules that accurately reflect project scope, timelines, resources, and dependencies. The Lead Planner/Scheduler provides leadership and direction to the planning team, ensuring that all scheduling activities are executed efficiently and effectively to support project delivery. This role is client-facing and involves significant collaboration with project managers, clients, and other stakeholders.
This role is onsite based out of our Edmonton office. Only applicants local to the Edmonton area will be considered.What You Will Be Working On
  • Lead the development of detailed project schedules, including the identification of key milestones, critical paths, and resource levelling requirements, ensuring alignment with project objectives.

  • Lead any internal or external schedule audits.

  • Lead schedule baseline development process and ensure a baseline schedule is submitted that meets or exceeds internal or external requirements.

  • Ensure that schedule data is stored in a smart and organized way within Bird's sharepoint and P6 database allowing team members to easily access project data.

  • Monitor and report on project progress against baseline schedules, identifying variances and developing corrective actions to mitigate risks.

  • Coordinate with project managers and other stakeholders to ensure the integration of cost, schedule, and scope data into comprehensive project control reports.

  • Oversee the updating of project schedules based on changes in scope, timeline, or resources, ensuring that all schedule changes are properly documented and communicated.

  • Lead the planning and scheduling team, providing guidance, mentoring, and support to Planning Specialists and Junior Planners.

  • Engage with clients to provide regular updates on project schedules and address any scheduling-related issues or concerns.

  • Conduct schedule risk analyses to identify potential delays and develop mitigation strategies.

  • Ensure that all planning and scheduling activities comply with Bird Construction standards and internal/external requirements.

  • Drive the continuous improvement of planning and scheduling practices within the organization.

What We Are Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.

  • Strong proficiency in planning and scheduling software (e.g., Primavera P6, Microsoft Project).

  • Advanced capability in the use of Microsoft Excel and data analysis tools.

  • Working knowledge and or experience with 4D schedule management and the integration with VDC tools (Synchro).

  • Ability to read and interpret engineered drawings. Extensive experience in project planning and scheduling, typically 8+ years, with significant experience in managing large and complex projects.

  • Proven leadership experience, including managing teams of planning professionals.

  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  • In-depth understanding of project management principles, including planning, scheduling, and risk management.

  • Commercial awareness and understanding of various contracting models

  • Professional qualifications (e.g., PMP, PSP, or AACE certification).

  • Experience in the construction industry, particularly in civil or industrial projects.

  • Experience working in a client-facing role and managing client expectations.

  • Knowledge of Earned Value Management (EVM) principles and practices.
