Job summary:
Westat is seeking a Lead Data Visualization Analyst to join our Statistics and Data Science Center. The position involves the design, development, and delivery of interactive data visualizations, analyses, and reporting solutions using Tableau or Power BI, and data manipulation using R, Python, and SQL with minimal oversight and supervision.
As part of the interview process, candidates will be asked to provide a portfolio sample showcasing their data visualization experience.
This is a full-time hybrid work position working from our Bethesda, Maryland office 2 days per week.
Job Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop and deliver interactive data visualizations, dashboards, and automated reporting solutions using open-source libraries in R and Python and proprietary software such as Tableau and Power BI.
  • Work independently with minimal oversight to conduct data manipulation, analysis, research, and develop visualizations.
  • Translate research questions and client requirements into analytical approaches, dashboards, and actionable insights.
  • Provide guidance, review, and technical feedback to team members on data analyses and visualizations, ensuring compliance with accessibility requirements, UI/UX standards, and effective data visualization principles.
  • Develop and maintain documentation for dashboards, methodologies, and data sources.
  • Develop and maintain code documentation using Git, implement coding standards, and apply best practices.
  • Communicate findings through high-quality written and oral products, including reports, presentations, abstracts, and other client deliverables.
  • Present to internal and external clients, engaging in direct client interaction to clarify requirements and communicate insights.
  • Contribute technical sections to proposals and other business development materials as needed.
  • Provide technical oversight and mentorship, and quality oversight to junior staff.
  • Serve as a team and task lead across complex projects, overseeing design, analysis, and implementation.
  • Contribute to business development activities.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in data visualization, information design, graphical design, data science, applied social science, computer science, statistics, or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in data analysis, data visualization, or business intelligence.
  • Demonstrated independence in developing analyses and visualizations using Tableau or Power BI, R, Python, and SQL.
  • Demonstrated design skills with knowledge of UI/UX best practices and the ability to create clear, actionable visual insights.
  • Proven experience using Git as version control system.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Tableau Desktop Foundations certification or willingness to obtain certification for Tableau or Power BI.
  • Experience working in a professional services research environment.
  • Knowledge of industry best practices and emerging technologies.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities and experience in developing actionable insights from complex data.
  • Interest in learning data science and artificial intelligence (AI) methods (e.g., natural language processing and machine learning methods, and large language models).
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills for presenting technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, including time management, and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and work both independently and in a team environment.
