Job description
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is hiring a Junior Data Analyst within the Office of the Chief Financial Officer (OCFO).
Reporting to the Business Assurance Manager, this foundation level role within the Business Assurance group provides reporting and data analytics support to the Procurement Department. Under general supervision, the Analyst will apply basic principles, theories, and concepts to bridge procurement business reporting needs and technology by collecting, cleaning, and analyzing financial data to produce actionable insights, financial reports, and dashboards. This position will use SQL, Excel, and data visualization tools to analyze data, detect trends and anomalies, and help the procurement organization in the decision support and strategic decision making by creating and or updating queries/reports/dashboards etc.
The Junior Data Analyst will engage with the Business Systems Group in understanding the OCFO's Business Systems and related data architecture, tables and reporting options.
What Success Looks Like:
- Precision: Take pride in data integrity and accuracy.
- Efficiency: Look for ways to automate repetitive manual reporting, freeing up time for deeper exploratory analysis.
- Curiosity: Don't just deliver a chart; ask follow-up questions that help the business pivot or grow.
- Collaboration: Translate data into plain English for scientific division and operations' teams.
As a Junior Data Analyst, you are the "first responder" to data queries, and data deliverables for the Procurement Department to the Department of Energy or University of California.
We're here for the same mission, to bring science solutions to the world. Join our team and YOU will play a supporting role in our goal to address global challenges! Have a high level of impact and work for an organization associated with 17 Nobel Prizes!
Why join Berkeley Lab?
We invest in our employees by offering a total rewards package you can count on:
- Exceptional health and retirement benefits, including pension or 401K-style plans
- Opportunities to grow in your career - check out our Tuition Assistance Program
- A culture where you'll belong - we are invested in our teams!
- In addition to accruing vacation and sick time, we also have a Winter Holiday Shutdown every year.
- Parental bonding leave (for both mothers and fathers)
- Pet insurance
You will:
- Assist with analyzing financial datasets to identify trends, patterns, and discrepancies; developing, maintaining, and automating reports and dashboards and utilize tools to identify trends and support data-driven decision-making.
- Support the department in transforming raw data into actionable insights. The primary focus is on data maintenance, basic reporting, and assisting senior analysts with moderate Division projects.
- Assist in gathering data from database sources. Perform regular data "hygiene" to identify, troubleshoot, and correct errors or inconsistencies in datasets.
- Develop and maintain automated reports and dashboards using LBNL supported tools to track key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Submit data reports to the Compliance team for DOE and UC reporting requirements.
- Perform initial analysis to identify trends, correlations, and patterns in structured and unstructured data.
- Maintain clear documentation of data definitions, analysis methodologies, and reporting processes to ensure data integrity across the organization.
- Work alongside different departments to understand their data needs and provide basic analytical support for their specific queries.
We are looking for:
- A Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science, or a related field, and a minimum of one year of professional experience in related fields.
- 1 year of experience in a data-related role with a solid foundational background in quantitative fields.
- Experience (through coursework or projects) using SQL to query databases and Excel for advanced data manipulation (VLOOKUPs, Pivot Tables).
- Internships, capstone projects, or a verifiable portfolio that demonstrates the ability to handle real-world data.
- Basic to intermediate knowledge of SQL (joins, subqueries, and data cleaning).
- Familiarity with programming languages for data analysis
- Exposure to data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, or Google Looker Studio).
- The ability to break down a complex problem into smaller, manageable parts and approach it with a logical, step-by-step methodology.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain technical findings to non-technical stakeholders clearly.
- An obsessive eye for accuracy-ensuring that the "small numbers" add up before they reach the final report.
- A "growth mindset" and a willingness to learn new tools and industries as the company's data needs evolve.
- Ability to interpret data, conduct analysis, and provide actionable insights.
- Knowledge of methods to research, interpret, analyze, compile, and present data and information
