Senior Thermal Analysis Engineer - IAMD

Company:

The Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) Space, Intelligence & Weapons Systems (SI&WS) organization is hiring a Senior Thermal Analyst to join the Integrated Design Engineering (IDE) Team in Huntsville, AL on the Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) Mechanical Engineering Capability Team. In this role, you will be responsible for analyzing, developing, and validating thermal environments, heat transfer, and temperature profiles of missile systems and subsystems to ensure performance, safety, and reliability under various mission and operational conditions.

The IDE team is responsible for the design, analysis, release and maintenance of the technical data package for developmental or flight hardware as well as supporting production and special test equipment design for various products within the IAMD portfolio. IDE supported programs include Intermediate Fires and Protection Controls (IFPC-2) (pending contract award), and the Boeing Patriot Advanced Capability 3 (PAC-3) Seeker and Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (ABMD) product lines. These programs encompass new designs as well test, manufacturing and production support for complex electro-mechanical assemblies.

Position Responsiblities:

  • Develop and validate detailed thermal load cases and steady-state/transient thermal response analyses for missile airframes, propulsion systems, electronics, and subsystems using advanced thermal modeling and simulation tools

  • Perform finite element thermal modeling (FEM), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), finite difference Method (FDM) heat transfer, radiation, conduction, and convection analyses to characterize missile system thermal behavior during various operational scenarios

  • Collaborate closely with design, test, and manufacturing teams to integrate thermal requirements into the overall design lifecycle

  • Interpret and apply relevant military, industry and program standards/specifications pertaining to thermal management, temperature limits, and environmental conditions

  • Lead root cause analyses and provide technical direction to resolve thermal issues discovered during analysis, testing, and operation

  • Support system-level trade studies and design optimizations to improve thermal performance while ensuring structural integrity and reliability

  • Prepare, review, and approve engineering documentation including thermal test plans, reports, specifications, and design reviews

  • Mentor junior engineers and provide subject matter expertise in thermal analysis and thermal management disciplines

  • Communicate technical information effectively with internal teams, suppliers, and external agencies

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (with a focus on Mechanical, Civil, Aerospace Aeronautical or Material Sciences)

  • 9+ years of experience in a related role

  • Proficiency with thermal analysis and CFD software (e.g., ANSYS Thermal, NX Simcenter, Thermal Desktop, SINDA/FLUINT, COMSOL, or equivalent)

  • Strong understanding of heat transfer mechanisms including conduction, convection, and radiation in aerospace applications

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail

  • Skill and ability to: collect, organize, synthesize, and analyze data; summarize findings; develop conclusions and recommendations from appropriate data sources

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment to produce high quality engineering products

  • Effective communication and teamwork skills

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Prior experience specifically with missile systems or defense aerospace projects

  • Familiarity with thermal management of propulsion systems and avionics

  • Experience with scripting and automation for thermal analysis processes (e.g., Python, MATLAB)

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Understanding of Boeing Engineering Standards and Design Practices

  • Experience with thermal and combined environment testing (thermal/vibration/shock)

  • Experience with integrated thermal-structural analyses

  • Strong ability to build trust and connection with the team and stakeholders

  • Strong ability to model and inspire servant leadership style, and model seek, speak, and listen behaviors

  • Flexibility, adaptability, and comfort with a highly dynamic and exciting work environment

  • Experience using Boeing Common Non-Recurring Product Development (C-NRPD) or equivalent Boeing Development Processes

  • Strong understanding of Finite Element Modeling techniques related to thermal analysis

  • Active U.S. Secret Clearance
