Job Description:

We are seeking a Scientific Instrumentation Engineer to join a Scientific Computing team supporting scientific instrumentation and research operations at NIAID. This role focuses on supporting, integrating, and troubleshooting scientific instruments and associated computing environments used in research laboratories. The engineer will work closely with scientists, laboratory staff, vendors, and internal IT teams to ensure instruments and supporting systems are reliable, secure, and fit for research needs.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the deployment, integration, troubleshooting, and lifecycle management of scientific instruments and their connected computing systems
  • Partner with researchers and laboratory staff to understand instrument workflows, operational requirements, and support needs
  • Coordinate with vendors, facilities, cybersecurity, and IT teams to support instrument installation, upgrades, and issue resolution
  • Troubleshoot instrument-connected workstations, software, data transfer paths, and peripheral systems
  • Help maintain documentation, inventories, and support procedures for scientific instrumentation environments
  • Assist with operating system support, software compatibility, patch coordination, and endpoint considerations for laboratory systems
  • Provide user support and guidance for instrument-related computing workflows and data handling processes
  • Identify opportunities to improve reliability, support processes, and user experience across instrumentation services

Required Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, information systems, biomedical engineering, or a related field and at least 5 years of related experience
  • Experience supporting scientific instruments, laboratory systems, or instrument-connected computing environments
  • Experience troubleshooting Windows and/or Linux workstations and scientific application software
  • Ability to work effectively with scientists, vendors, and cross-functional technical teams
  • Strong documentation, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Experience in a customer-facing or service-oriented technical support role

Desired Skills:

  • Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation environments and research data workflows
  • Experience with networking, endpoint support, and system integration in lab settings
  • Understanding of security and operational considerations for instrument-connected systems
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities across a diverse instrument support portfolio

The likely salary range for this position is $106,250 - $143,750. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. Rather, salary will be set based on experience, geographic location and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.
