Junior App Developer information

What does a junior app developer do?

A Junior App Developer is an entry-level professional who assists in the design, development, testing, and maintenance of mobile or web applications. They typically work under the supervision of more experienced developers, writing code, fixing bugs, and learning about various programming languages and development tools. Junior App Developers also collaborate with team members to understand user requirements and contribute to the overall functionality and improvement of applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior app developer?

To thrive as a Junior App Developer, you need a solid grasp of programming languages (such as Java, Swift, or JavaScript), understanding of software development principles, and a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with integrated development environments (IDEs), version control systems like Git, and knowledge of frameworks such as React Native or Flutter are typically expected. Problem-solving abilities, teamwork, adaptability, and effective communication help set candidates apart in collaborative and fast-changing environments. These skills and qualities ensure you can build reliable applications, work well with teammates, and adapt to evolving project requirements.

What types of projects and technologies do junior app developers typically work on in their first year?

As a Junior App Developer, you will often start by working on smaller features, bug fixes, or assisting with app maintenance under the guidance of more experienced developers. Common technologies include popular programming languages like Java, Swift, Kotlin, or JavaScript, and frameworks such as React Native or Flutter, depending on whether your team focuses on iOS, Android, or cross-platform apps. You'll likely be involved in code reviews, testing, and collaborating with designers and product managers to ensure your work aligns with user needs and business goals. This hands-on experience helps you build foundational skills and prepares you for more complex assignments as you gain confidence.

Job description

At Lyft, our purpose is to serve and connect. We aim to achieve this by cultivating a work environment where all team members belong and have the opportunity to thrive.

To fulfill Lyft's mission of creating the real-time transportation network of the future, Lyft needs engineers from a scope of disciplines. We need engineers to help us intelligently scale our backend infrastructure, to increase pricing in real time given localized supply and demand data, to predict future localized demand, to create delightful and intuitive UX flows for passengers and drivers, to improve our cloud infrastructure orchestration and monitoring, to increase dispatched driver-passenger pairings based on real-time data and real-world edge cases, to build tools to increase the efficiency of our customer service team, and more.

  • You're an enthusiastic and experienced app developer looking to take your skills to the next level by joining our iOS team.
  • You're excited about scaling millions of lines of Swift code and hundreds of mobile developers.
  • Our app is used by millions of people, and we take great pride in our work. This means excellent development practices, careful code architecture, and an organization built around rapid releases.

Our codebase is written entirely in Swift with modern design patterns and coding standards. We rely on 3rd party libraries and contribute back to the community (including the Swift language itself).

  • Help establish roadmap and architecture based on technology and our needs
  • Write well-crafted, well-tested, readable, maintainable code
  • Participate in code reviews to ensure code quality and distribute knowledge
  • Share your knowledge by giving brown bags, tech talks, and promoting appropriate tech and engineering best practices
  • Performing thoughtful code reviews for colleagues, and help others by conducting high-quality code reviews
  • Participate in hiring activities: take part in technical interviews, live coding, share detailed feedback to hiring best technical talent in the function
  • Support junior members on the team through mentorship as well as code and technical reviews.
Experience:
  • Delivering high-quality code
  • Working closely with designers and product managers
  • Solid Swift knowledge
  • Bonus Points: contributions to open source projects, experience with declarative UI frameworks like SwiftUI, experience with unidirectional and reactive programming
  • 4+ years of software engineering industry experience
  • Experience with object-oriented programming
  • Write clear, scalable and clear design documentation
  • Design, build and improve a set of team owned components
Benefits:
  • Extended health and dental coverage options, along with life insurance and disability benefits
  • Mental health benefits
  • Family building benefits
  • Child care and pet benefits
  • Access to a Lyft funded Health Care Savings Account
  • RRSP plan with company match to help save for your future
  • In addition to provincial observed holidays, salaried team members are covered under Lyft's flexible paid time off policy. The policy allows team members to take off as much time as they need (with manager approval). Hourly team members get 15 days paid time off, with an additional day for each year of service
  • Lyft is proud to support new parents with 18 weeks of paid time off, designed as a top-up plan to complement provincial programs. Biological, adoptive, and foster parents are all eligible.
  • Subsidized commuter benefits and Lyft ride credits
