What is a junior and intermediate software developer?

Junior and Intermediate Software Developers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain software applications, but with differing levels of experience and responsibility. A Junior Developer is typically at the beginning of their career, focusing on learning coding practices, debugging, and supporting senior team members. An Intermediate Developer has gained more experience, often taking on complex tasks, contributing to software architecture decisions, and mentoring juniors. Junior and Intermediate Software Developers typically work on a mix of tasks such as writing and testing code, fixing bugs, and contributing to the development of new features under the guidance of more senior team members. Juniors often focus on smaller, well-defined tasks or portions of a larger project, while intermediates may handle more complex assignments, participate in code reviews, and collaborate on architectural decisions. Both roles usually involve regular communication with other developers, QA testers, and sometimes stakeholders, helping to ensure the software meets user needs and quality standards. This collaborative, learning-focused environment helps build technical skills and prepares developers for advanced responsibilities over time.
