What does a junior algorithmic trading software developer do?

A Junior Algorithmic Trading Software Developer assists in designing, developing, and maintaining software systems used for automated trading in financial markets. Their responsibilities typically include writing code for trading algorithms, backtesting strategies, optimizing performance, and troubleshooting issues under the guidance of senior developers. They may also collaborate with traders and quantitative analysts to implement new trading ideas. This role requires strong programming skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of both software engineering and financial markets.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior algorithmic trading software developer?

To thrive as a Junior Algorithmic Trading Software Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Python, C++, or Java, a solid understanding of algorithms and data structures, and a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with trading platforms, version control systems (e.g., Git), and financial data analysis tools such as MATLAB or NumPy is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for this fast-paced environment. These competencies are vital for developing robust, efficient trading systems and collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary teams in the high-stakes world of algorithmic trading.

What are some typical challenges faced by junior algorithmic trading software developers, and how can they overcome them?

Junior Algorithmic Trading Software Developers often face challenges such as optimizing code for speed, understanding complex financial instruments, and adapting to rapidly changing market conditions. It’s common to work in a fast-paced environment where small coding errors can have significant financial implications. To overcome these challenges, junior developers should focus on rigorous code testing, seek mentorship from senior team members, and stay updated on both programming and financial industry trends. Collaboration with quantitative analysts and traders is also essential for understanding strategy requirements and improving system performance.

What is the difference between Junior Algorithmic Trading Software Developer vs Quantitative Analyst?

Job description

Join Our Team as a Software Engineer
Las Vegas, NV | Full-Time | Aerospace & Defense

About EO Solutions:
EO Solutions is a fast-growing software and prototype manufacturing company committed to transitioning cutting-edge technologies from the research lab to real-world defense applications. Our current focus is building and integrating advanced Space Domain Awareness (SDA) capabilities, including both active and passive sensors. At EO, we value learning, innovation, and problem-solving above all.

Position Overview:

This role is based at our Las Vegas office, where our software, hardware, and systems teams work side-by-side.
As a Software Engineer at EO Solutions, you’ll take a hands-on role in developing mission-critical systems that support Space Domain Awareness (SDA). This is not a narrow software development role — it’s a multidisciplinary engineering position where you’ll design, prototype, and deploy software that interacts with real-world sensors, supports operational decision-making, and adapts to fast-changing mission needs.

You’ll work across the entire development lifecycle — from early-stage R&D to fielded deployments — contributing to both back-end and front-end systems, algorithm development, and infrastructure automation. Whether you're deploying services to edge devices in remote environments or refining code based on operator feedback, your work will directly impact national defense capabilities.

We're looking for engineers who can think critically, operate independently, and communicate effectively with teammates from different engineering backgrounds. If you're energized by solving hard problems, working with physical systems, and building things that get used in the real world, you’ll thrive here.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement innovative algorithms for tracking, image processing, and data fusion
  • Design and build robust software systems for sensor control and mission operations
  • Prototype and deploy containerized applications to cloud, on-premise, and edge computing environments
  • Collaborate with engineers, scientists, and field operators to translate mission needs into working software
  • Write and maintain high-quality, well-tested, and observable code with clear documentation
  • Contribute to architecture planning, technical discussions, and code reviews to ensure a scalable and maintainable codebase
  • Engage in requirement gathering and refinement with cross-disciplinary stakeholders
  • Operate with self-sufficiency and ownership, managing your time and priorities with minimal oversight

Required Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience using Python, C or C++, and Java
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate in a technical, multidisciplinary environment
  • Experience developing in both cloud-based and self-hosted (on-premise/edge) environments
  • Proficient with Docker and Kubernetes for containerization and orchestration
  • Familiarity with distributed systems and messaging technologies (e.g., Kafka, NATS, RabbitMQ)
  • Experience with both SQL and NoSQL database design and usage
  • Skilled in both rapid prototyping and production-grade development, with sound judgment on when each applies
  • Solid understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and engineering best practices
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field from a U.S. institution
  • U.S. Citizenship and ability to obtain a DoD Secret Security Clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with real-world sensor systems (e.g., cameras, telescopes, RF sensors)
  • Familiarity with astrodynamics, orbital mechanics, or Space Domain Awareness (SDA)
  • Exposure to DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and test automation
  • Background in research prototyping, defense systems, or mission-critical deployments

Why Join EO Solutions?
At EO Solutions, our people are our greatest asset. We offer:

The opportunity to work on innovative space technologies and make a meaningful impact.
A collaborative and supportive environment that values growth, creativity, and well-being.
A competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package, including:
401(k) Matching: Invest in your future with our generous retirement plan.
Healthcare: Robust medical, dental, and vision plans for you and your family.
HSA: Support for health-related expenses.
Life Insurance: Comprehensive coverage for peace of mind.
Paid Time Off: Generous PTO policies to maintain work-life balance.
Relocation Assistance: Support for qualified candidates moving to Las Vegas.
Tuition Reimbursement: Opportunities for continued education and skill development.

EO Solutions Corp is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
We are committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace.
