Position Summary
The Director of Simulation Education provides strategic, academic, and administrative leadership for the Carle Illinois College of Medicine's simulation education and research enterprise. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Director is responsible for the strategic direction, educational quality, operational oversight, and continuous advancement of simulation-based education across undergraduate medical education (UME), graduate medical education (GME), and interprofessional education (IPE). The position provides administrative oversight of the JUMP Simulation Center, directs the integration of emerging educational technologies and evidence-based simulation practices, and establishes institutional priorities that support learner achievement, competency-informed education, accreditation, research, and educational innovation.
Reporting to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Director of Simulation Education serves as a key member of the Academic Affairs leadership team and contributes to institutional planning, accreditation activities, and long-range strategic initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- The strategic and administrative leader for the college's simulation education and research enterprise, establishing long-range priorities, directing institutional simulation strategy, and ensuring the continuous advancement of simulation-based education and research in alignment with the college's mission, accreditation standards, and evolving educational best practices.
- Establish and oversee institutional policies, standards, and priorities governing simulation-based education, assessment, debriefing, educational quality, and integration with the center's educational and research missions.
- Provide institutional leadership for collaborative simulation initiatives and cultivate strategic partnerships with healthcare organizations, industry, academic institutions, and internal stakeholders to advance innovation, educational quality, and competency-informed medical education.
- Serve as the institutional representative for the JUMP Simulation Center on regional, national, and professional committees, organizations, and collaborative partnerships related to simulation education.
Curriculum & Educational Innovation
- Provide leadership for the integration of simulation research and curriculum, ensuring that research findings and emerging evidence inform simulation-based teaching, assessment, and curricular improvement, while educational priorities and outcomes help shape the simulation research agenda.
- Provide leadership and educational expertise to faculty and curriculum leaders to advance the integration, development, implementation, and continuous improvement of simulation-based learning and assessment across the medical education continuum.
- Advance faculty engagement and participation in simulation-based education through recruitment, development, and support of simulation educators.
- Provide strategic oversight for the evaluation, adoption, and integration of emerging educational technologies that advance simulation-based learning, learner assessment, and educational innovation.
Operational Leadership
- The Director provides administrative leadership for the educational mission of the JUMP Simulation Center and directly supervises the Associate Director of Simulation Research, Associate Director of Clinical Simulation, and Simulation Center Manager to ensure alignment of educational, operational, and research priorities.
- Direct budget planning, fiscal stewardship, capital equipment planning, technology acquisition, and long-term resource management to support the educational mission of the Simulation Center.
- Ensure ongoing compliance with LCME, ACGME, and other applicable accreditation standards related to simulation resources, clinical skills education, and institutional educational quality.
Faculty Development & Collaboration
- Champion faculty development in simulation pedagogy, competency-informed assessment, facilitation, debriefing, and other evidence-based simulation education practices.
- Partner with simulation research leaders to strengthen integration between educational scholarship and simulation research.
- Collaborate with Carle Health and institutional partners to advance aligned simulation programming supporting undergraduate and graduate medical education, and professional education.
- Cultivate interprofessional education through strategic partnerships with nursing, engineering, allied health, and other academic and clinical programs.
Assessment & Quality Improvement
- Oversee the development and continuous advancement of simulation-based assessment strategies in collaboration with institutional assessment leadership to support competency-informed medical education.
- Ensure simulation-based assessment practices demonstrate educational validity, reliability, and alignment with institutional competency frameworks while informing curricular and program improvement.
- Advance continuous quality improvement initiatives that strengthen simulation-based education, learner assessment, and program evaluation.
Scholarship & External Engagement
- Lead educational scholarship in simulation-based education, competency-informed education, clinical skills assessment, and educational innovation through collaborative research and innovation, dissemination, and professional engagement.
- Collaborate with simulation research leaders and institutional partners to advance integration between educational scholarship and simulation research initiatives.
- Disseminate scholarly work through publications and presentations, workshops at regional, national, and international professional meetings.
- Establish collaborative relationships with professional societies, academic institutions, and national simulation organizations to advance educational scholarship, professional engagement, and dissemination of best practices.
Other
- Maintain confidentiality of student, faculty, patient, and institutional information in accordance with FERPA, HIPAA, and applicable university and healthcare policies.
- Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships that promote professionalism, collegiality, respect, and effective interdisciplinary teamwork.
- Foster an inclusive environment that supports diversity, equity, inclusion, and equal employment opportunity principles throughout the college.
- Champion collaborative partnerships that strengthen the relationship between Carle Illinois College of Medicine, Carle Health, and other academic and clinical partners.
- Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and institutional leadership to prepare documentation supporting LCME accreditation standards, continuous quality improvement, and institutional reporting requirements.
- Maintain active participation in national organizations related to simulation, medical education, and educational innovation to inform institutional strategy and ensure adoption of emerging best practices.
- Travel as required.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- MD, DO, MBBS, or PhD degree in engineering, medical education, health professions education, clinical education, basic sciences, or related field.
- At least 3-5 years of successful teaching, research and mentoring experience post-training.
- At least 3-5 years instructional experience in medical simulation.
Preferred Qualifications
- For physicians, completion of specialty training in a postgraduate residency program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and current board certification by a member board of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or the American Osteopathic Association Bureau of Osteopathic Specialties (AOABOS).
- Instructional experience in a school of medicine preferred.

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close date. The budgeted salary range for this position is $150,000-$225,000. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
This position is eligible for sponsorship for work authorization, except for sponsorship of a new H1B petition that would incur the $100,000 fee.
