Who Are We Looking For?

We're looking for a skilled and enthusiastic Junior Data Engineer to join our growing team! We're a close-knit group building and maintaining mission-critical data products, and we need someone who can hit the ground running.

This role requires a solid understanding of data engineering best practices, and experience with orchestration, data modeling, and data warehouses. You'll be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining production data pipelines that power customer-facing solutions. You’ll leverage various technologies we already use, including GCP services like Cloud Composer, Cloud SQL, and BigQuery.

Beyond the technical skills, we value collaboration, a proactive approach to problem-solving, and a willingness to learn and adapt to evolving technologies. If you're passionate about data, thrive in a collaborative environment, and are excited by the prospect of working on impactful projects, we encourage you to apply.

This is a hybrid role based out of Citylitics’ Toronto office and requires 3+ days in-office per week.

What Will You Accomplish? / How You Will Make An Immediate Impact:

  • Design, build, and maintain: Develop and deploy highly performant, reliable, and maintainable pipelines using Airflow and BigQuery. This includes everything from initial design and development through testing, deployment, and ongoing monitoring and maintenance.
  • Data Modeling & Optimization: Collaborate with data analysts and stakeholders to define data requirements, and design efficient and effective data models within BigQuery. You’ll be optimizing queries and pipeline/dashboard performance for maximum efficiency.
  • Custom Solutions: Serve as the dedicated data engineering resource for our Custom Solutions work, partnering closely with Data, Product, and Customer Success teams to take bespoke client requests from validated proof-of-concept through to production. Throughout, you'll translate client requirements into technical solutions and clearly communicate technical details and project progress to stakeholders.
  • Continuous Improvement: Contribute to the ongoing improvement of our data infrastructure and processes, including suggesting and implementing new technologies and best practices. We're a team that actively uses AI tools to work smarter - from accelerating development and debugging to assisting with design and documentation. We're looking for someone who's comfortable leveraging AI to boost their productivity and is excited to help us find new ways to build faster and better.
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

    • Proficiency in Python and SQL.
    • Proven experience (2+ years) building and maintaining data pipelines using Airflow/Cloud Composer.
    • Strong understanding of data warehousing principles and experience working with BigQuery.
    • Understanding of data engineering fundamentals, like ETL/ELT, data modeling, and building idempotent, reliable pipelines.
    • Experience with Git and cloud platforms (GCP preferred).
    • Experience building and deploying interactive dashboards or data apps (e.g., Dash on Cloud Run) is a plus.
    • Excellent problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues.
    • Excellent communication and collaboration skills - you'll be working closely with analysts and other stakeholders.
    • Comfort and enthusiasm for using AI tools like Claude in your daily workflow.

Vacancy Status: This position is for an existing and active vacancy that the company is currently seeking to fill.

Benefits

What’s in it for you?

  • Make real-world impact: Influence positive change across one of the biggest societal challenges of our generation: building and maintaining sustainable public infrastructure.
  • Sell a genuinely differentiated platform: You’ll represent a disruptive, data-driven solution with a compelling value proposition in a market that is eager to engage.
  • Operate at the intersection of infrastructure, scale-up, and data science: We live where infrastructure meets AI and advanced data. There is no other team like ours in Toronto.
  • Move fast, learn faster: There’s no corporate bureaucracy here. You’ll accomplish more in a few months than you would in years at a large, entrenched technology company.
  • Be empowered by data and AI: We believe Data and AI will play an outsized role in the future of sales and decision-making. Every CityZen has access to generative AI tools and our full data universe to enhance productivity and encourage experimentation.
  • Grow with intention: We invest deeply in our people through in-role coaching, skill-based development, an internal mentorship program, and clear internal promotion pathways.
