Job description

JOB TITLE:     Jr Transmission System Operator 
REQUISITION:      TRA010C
DEPARTMENT:    Transmission System Operations
LOCATION:       Topeka, KS
PAY:     $59.10 
Headquartered in both Kansas City and Topeka, Evergy employs about 4,900 people who are dedicated to empowering a better future.  We are currently seeking qualified candidates for a Junior Transmission System Operator in Topeka, KS.

Scheduled Work Hours:   Rotating shifts (upon completing job qualifications and training).  This is a union represented position.  The successful applicant will be required to live within 50 minutes driving time of the Topeka General Office.

Evergy is currently looking for one (1) engineering professional or technical expert to join their Transmission System Operations group.  This individual will have the opportunity to manage the reliability of the power system in real time and coordinate planned maintenance and unplanned restoration efforts in our highly complex and dynamic transmission system. Transmission System Operators are expected to handle sudden disruptions caused by equipment failure or weather to ensure that electricity is delivered in a reliable and economical manner.  This is a great opportunity for engineers and other technical professionals!

Summary of Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Evergy is looking for a Junior Transmission System Operator or Assistant Transmission System Operator to join our team!  This position is responsible for:
    Monitoring the transmission system and responding to dynamic conditions, 
    Mitigating system emergencies (i.e. storm response, system blackout, load shed, system restoration), 
    Coordinating planned maintenance and construction outages, and 
    Conducting reliability analysis using on-line programs and interfacing with the Regional Reliability Coordinator. 

This position does require the selected candidate to successfully operate in a high stress environment, routinely work alone with minimal direction, work occasional overtime at times with minimal notice, be able to handle occasional travel, and be able to distinguish colors on computer screens.  The job is an operating console position in a secured/limited access control room environment.  The selected candidate must pass a security background review.

Education, Experience, Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Preferred:
The preferred candidate will possess 5 or more years of electrical utility experience in field operations, substation services, system operations and/or power plant operations.  It is also preferred that the candidate has a technology-related degree with electrical or engineering emphasis. All qualifications will be reviewed for the appropriate combination of experience, education and competencies to be selected for this position.  Entry level candidates may be considered for this role if their background is complimentary to the competencies required to perform the job. The selected individual must be able to make thoughtful, planned decisions in a team environment and also make quick and accurate decisions in a real-time, high-stress and fast-paced environment.  

The ideal candidate will also possess a NERC System Operator Certification or will be expected to obtain NERC System Operator Certification at the Transmission; or Balancing, Interchange, and Transmission; level within 5 months of employment.  Candidates selected for further consideration must complete the EEI SO/PD II pre-employment screening assessment.  This is an industry specific test for transmission system operations through the Edison Electric Institute.

Job Progression:
A vacancy now exists at the Topeka General Office for a Junior Transmission System Operator, wage rate $59.10, rotating shift.  Upon successful completion of job-related tests and qualifications through education, experience and physical abilities, the Junior Transmission System Operator shall promote to the Assistant Transmission System Operator, at a wage rate of $64.16, rotating shift.  Upon successful completion of job-related tests and qualifications through education, experience and physical abilities, the Assistant Transmission System Operator shall promote to Transmission System Operator at a wage rate of $71.00, rotating shift.  

Junior Transmission System Operator shall have the skill and physical ability necessary to train for a minimum of two (2) years to become an Assistant Transmission System Operator.  The applicant must also pass a pre-qualification test and interview to assure the Company and himself/herself that they are capable of performing the duties of Junior Transmission System Operator.

Assistant Transmission System Operator shall have two (2) years experience as Junior Transmission System Operator and successfully completed job related tests and are qualified through education, experience and physical ability to perform duties of Assistant Transmission System Operator.  Assistant Transmission System Operator shall promote to Transmission System Operator.

Transmission System Operator shall have at least six (6) months experience as Assistant Transmission System Operator who have successfully completed job related tests and are qualified through education, experience, and physical ability to perform duties of Transmission System Operator.
