What is a jr developer?

Jr Developers, or Junior Developers, are entry-level professionals in the software development field. They typically have less experience than mid-level or senior developers and are responsible for writing, testing, and maintaining code under the guidance of more experienced team members. Jr Developers often work on smaller tasks, bug fixes, or simple features, and are expected to learn and grow their technical skills through mentorship and hands-on experience. Their role is essential for building a solid foundation in software development and contributing to the success of development projects.

What does a junior developer do?

A junior developer assists in designing, coding, testing, and maintaining software applications under the supervision of senior developers. They typically work with programming languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript and use development tools such as version control systems. Their role involves learning best practices and gaining experience in software development processes.

How much does a junior developer get paid?

A junior developer typically earns between $50,000 and $70,000 annually, depending on location, industry, and skills. Entry-level roles often require knowledge of programming languages like JavaScript, Python, or Java, and may include benefits such as training and mentorship.

What are some common challenges a jr developer might face when joining a new team, and how can they overcome them?

As a Jr Developer, one of the most common challenges is adapting to unfamiliar codebases and workflows. It can be daunting to understand existing projects and navigate team-specific tools and processes. To overcome this, Jr Developers should proactively seek help from team members, take thorough notes, and dedicate time to reviewing documentation and code. Embracing code reviews and asking questions will not only accelerate learning but also help build relationships within the team.

Job description

Description

Client is looking to hire a Software Engineer for a 6 month contract to hire. This is a hybrid position, where the candidate will need to be onsite 3 days a week in Dallas, TX. We're expanding our engineering team with a key hire: a Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE). Unlike a traditional software engineer, a FDE owns business problems from discovery through production. You'll work directly with engineering, operations, product, implementation, and customer stakeholders to understand operational challenges, design scalable solutions, build them, deploy them, and measure their impact. You'll solve complex challenges across our logistics platform, including Warehouse Management (WMS), Order Management (OMS), Transportation Management (TMS), Labor Management (LMS), billing, integrations, and AI-powered workflows. This is a high-autonomy role where ambiguity is expected, priorities evolve quickly, and success is measured by business outcomes - not tickets completed.

The new hire will pick up the highest priority project, read the spec, spend time with peers/Director on the relevant models, research and iterate with AI tools to document the plan. They run the technical design, align with stakeholders, and execute.

The product: new warehouse management and fulfillment platform, the operational backbone for e-commerce brands that ship physical goods. Think inventory control, order routing, carrier integrations, billing, and real-time warehouse operations, all running on software that has to work every time a shipment goes out the door.

The problem you'll help solve: The platform is scaling fast and the work reflects it. For example, the team is building an Inventory Transaction Ledger, a self-service audit trail that lets customers see every inventory movement in their account, end to end. They're standing up ephemeral preview environments so developers can spin up a full isolated copy of the platform per pull request, dramatically shrinking QA cycle time. And they're deepening integrations with carriers (Orderful, Netsuite, LTL, EDI) as new fulfillment channels come online. A new engineer here won't be maintaining a legacy system, they'll be building things that don't exist yet.

Responsibilities

• Partner directly with Operations, Product, Customer Success, Implementation, and Engineering teams to solve complex business problems.

• Own initiatives from discovery through production, including solution design, implementation, deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement.

• Translate operational workflows into scalable software solutions.

• Build and maintain end-to-end logistics integrations (WMS, OMS, TMS, LMS).

• Develop and support Shopify integrations and iPaaS connectivity.

• Expand our in-house WMS fulfillment platform.

• Design scalable event-driven systems supporting orders, inventory, warehouse events, billing, and fulfillment automation.

• Develop EDI integrations supporting wholesale, retail, freight, and omnichannel customers.

• Build ERP integrations supporting financial synchronization, reconciliation, and operational reporting.

• Enhance billing capabilities including payment processing, auto-recharge, billing rules, and charge validation.

• Develop labor management capabilities including productivity metrics, forecasting, workforce planning, and operational reporting.

• Improve inventory visibility through enhanced traceability, lot control, expiration management, and warehouse analytics.

• Design highly reliable asynchronous processing using Celery and distributed task queues.

• Partner with QA and Infrastructure to improve CI/CD pipelines, observability, monitoring, resilience, and deployment automation.

• Use AI engineering tools (GitHub Copilot, Codex, ChatGPT, Claude, etc.) to accelerate software delivery and improve engineering effectiveness.

• Participate in customer implementations, technical discovery sessions, architecture reviews, and operational design discussions when needed.

• Work across the entire platform rather than owning a single service or component.

• Drive technical decisions that improve customer experience and operational efficiency.

Requirements

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, or equivalent experience demonstrating exceptional ownership, independent delivery, and the ability to rapidly learn new technologies and business domains.

• Strong Python and Django experience, including Django REST Framework.

• Strong PostgreSQL experience, including schema design and performance optimization.

• Experience designing distributed systems and event-driven architectures.

• Experience building REST APIs, webhooks, OAuth2 integrations, and asynchronous messaging systems.

• Experience working with AWS (EKS, Kubernetes, Lambda, S3, CloudFront, etc.).

• Experience with Celery or comparable asynchronous processing frameworks.

• Understanding of warehouse operations including receiving, put-away, replenishment, picking, packing, shipping, and inventory management.

• Experience integrating with enterprise business systems including WMS, OMS, ERP, TMS, or LMS platforms.

• Experience working directly with cross-functional stakeholders to define technical solutions.

• Strong debugging, troubleshooting, and systems thinking skills.

• Excellent communication skills with both technical and business audiences.

• Comfortable operating with incomplete requirements and evolving priorities.

Nice to Haves

• Experience with Shopify, BigCommerce, Amazon Marketplace, or similar commerce platforms.

• Experience with NetSuite or other ERP systems.

• Experience with EDI transaction processing.

• Experience with iPaaS platforms (Alloy, Pipe17, Dropstream, etc.).

• Experience with React.

• Experience with ArgoCD, Helm, Kubernetes, GitOps, and cloud-native deployment strategies.

• Experience with Elasticsearch, Kibana, Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, or Sentry.

• Experience with AI coding assistants and autonomous development workflows.

• Experience participating in customer-facing implementation or solution architecture discussions.

About the product

• Product is a technology-first third-party logistics (3PL) provider on a mission to empower exceptional customer experiences through seamless, end-to-end fulfillment.

• Backed by WSI's 60 years of supply chain expertise, Kase combines enterprise logistics reach with modern cloud-native software to power fulfillment for leading e-commerce brands across DTC, wholesale, retail, and omnichannel commerce.

• Our platform spans warehouse management, order orchestration, billing, integrations, inventory visibility, and AI-driven operational workflows—all built by a collaborative engineering team focused on solving real customer problems.

Who You Are

• You think like an owner.

• You don't wait for someone to write perfect requirements before taking action. You enjoy working through ambiguity, asking the right questions, and turning messy operational problems into elegant technical solutions.

• Our FDEs don't receive fully written requirements. They work directly with operations, product, and customers to discover problems, define requirements, propose solution designs, and then build and deploy those solutions. They combine the discovery skills often associated with a Business Analyst or Solutions Architect with the technical depth of a software engineer.

• You treat software as one part of solving the customer's problem.

• When a warehouse process is inefficient...you investigate.

• When an integration is failing...you fix it.

• When a customer experiences friction...

you understand why and improve the system.

• You communicate effectively with both engineers and non-technical stakeholders. You know when to lead, when to collaborate, and when to ask for help.

• You move quickly without sacrificing quality, and you naturally balance technical excellence with practical business value.
