Position Overview:

Solutions Dev Engineer - Controls -HVAC Construction
Johnson Controls helps create smart, healthy, and sustainable buildings through HVAC, fire protection, life safety, and energy efficiency solutions. In this role, you will support the HVAC Construction Sales team by turning customer needs into accurate, competitive, and technically sound proposals.
You will work in a dynamic environment where quality and innovative solutions are the standard, partnering closely with sales and operations to support midsize and larger projects from early requirements through commercial offer.
Role Overview
As a Sales Support Engineer, you will own the pre-sales estimating process and help shape the best solution for the customer from both a technical and commercial perspective. Your work will support strong proposals, reliable pricing, and clear alignment between the customer’s requirements and the final offer.
Key Responsibilities
  • Translate customer requirements into complete, competitive commercial offers for HVAC construction projects.
  • Develop accurate estimates and proposals for midsize and larger projects using approved tools and procedures.
  • Work closely with sales and operations to clarify scope, assumptions, pricing, and solution options.
  • Review customer documentation, specifications, and request details to identify risks, deviations, and interpretation gaps.
  • Validate subcontractor pricing and incorporate third-party quotes into your calculations.
  • Prepare for and contribute to pre-bid review meetings, bid clarifications, and proposal reviews.
  • Manage and maintain data from previous calculations to improve future pricing accuracy and consistency.
  • Support specification deviations, technical clarifications, and commercial questions throughout the bidding process.
  • Conduct site visits when needed to better understand project requirements and site conditions.
  • Coordinate inputs from internal stakeholders to ensure proposals are complete, timely, and well structured.
How You Will Do It

You will own your process end to end, staying accountable for deadlines, quality, and clear communication.

  • You will stay close to the work by working directly with sales, operations, subcontractors, and customers to remove obstacles and keep estimates grounded in reality.
  • You will use facts, previous calculations, and structured estimating tools to build consistent and defendable pricing.
  • You will approach unclear scopes with curiosity and candor, asking the right questions early and resolving differences before they affect the offer.
  • You will look for practical improvements in how estimates are prepared, reviewed, and shared so the process gets better over time.
  • You will succeed by collaborating openly, valuing different perspectives, and working as one team across functions.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent industry experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience estimating large commercial HVAC projects.
  • Experience in a similar role within a technology-driven environment.
  • Strong ability to lead the estimating process independently and keep multiple priorities moving.
  • Solid understanding of working in a team environment and collaborating closely with sales and operations.
  • Effective communication skills, including the ability to explain technical and commercial details clearly.
  • Proactive, self-starting attitude with strong ownership and follow-through.
  • Hands-on experience with MS Word, MS Excel, MS Visio, and MS Project.
Nice to Have
  • Experience in design-build construction and HVAC project environments.
  • Knowledge of installation work or the electrical industry.
  • Experience using estimation tools, RFPs, RFIs, and bid-review processes.
Why Join Us
You will join a collaborative team that values technical quality, commercial insight, and practical problem-solving. This role gives you the opportunity to work on meaningful HVAC construction projects while partnering closely with sales and operations to deliver strong customer solutions.
If you are ready to bring technical depth and commercial thinking together, we would love to hear from you.

HIRING SALARY RANGE: $75,000.-104,000. (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.) This position includes a competitive benefits package. The posted salary range reflects the target compensation for this role. However, we recognize that exceptional candidates may bring unique skills andexperiences that exceed the typical profile.
