Salary: $25 per hour

The Center for African Immigrants and Refugee Organization (CAIRO) is a culturally specific organization that aims to reduce opportunity gaps and address barriers for African immigrant youth in St. Cloud area schools. Our mission isto advocate for and act to increase equity and social justice through programs, services, community organizing and collaborative leadership that create equitable opportunities for African refugees and immigrant children, youth and families to thrive.We envision a more just and equitable society in which children, youth, and families live in sustained, supportive communities, which reinforce the cultural wealth and lived experience of the family.

CAIRO works closely with African students, parents and schools to build spaces where children feel safe, supported and ready to learn. We are seeking summer/after school tutors who will work with students needing extra help in areas of reading, science and math, for 3rd-8th graders. This program would also provide supplemental enrichment activities including but not limited to mentoring, technology skills building, and extra-curricular activities.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Provide in-person tutoring sessions with students at the CAIRO office or in schools. Tutoring will include working in a one-on-one or group setting.

  • Facilitate family involvement with schools and student success through the SPACE program

  • Meet with students and review subjects relevant to their skill levels and academic performance. Carefully explaining how to solve problems and checking completed work.

  • Use culturally responsive teaching strategies, understanding the challenges of disrupted education, English language learners, and immigration.

  • Help students develop study skills and organization techniques to help improve their academic performance.

  • Keep reports on students' activities and share reports with supervisors.

  • Besides the academic support, tutors supervise groups of students, providing discipline and serving as a role model.

Education Requirements:

REQUIRED: Bachelors in educator and/or teaching license

Ability to deliver original instruction in the area of student needs

PREFERRED: Bilingual and prior experience

Skills & Abilities


  • Knowledge of & experience with technology and troubleshooting skills required. Google Office Suite experience strongly preferred.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; good organization/ planning skills; good analytical skills to read outcomes reports and measure a child's progress.

  • Home visiting or other direct experience working with parents is preferred.

Work Environment & Location

Work hand in hand with CAIRO staff to develop a tutoring schedule and strengthen the tutoring program. Tutoring support will be in-person at the CAIRO office or at specific schools in St. Cloud. Tutors will work approximately 16 hours a week, mostly during the day in the Summer and in the afternoons & evenings during the Fall.
