How much do jet engine mechanic jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 20, 2026, the average hourly pay for jet engine mechanic in Texas is $19.71, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $19.71 and $19.71 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a jet engine mechanic do?

A Jet Engine Mechanic inspects, repairs, maintains, and tests jet engines to ensure they operate safely and efficiently. Their work involves diagnosing mechanical issues, replacing faulty parts, performing routine maintenance, and keeping detailed service records. Jet Engine Mechanics may work on engines for airplanes, helicopters, or other aircraft that use jet propulsion. They must follow strict safety procedures and comply with aviation regulations to ensure the reliability and safety of every engine they service.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a jet engine mechanic?

To thrive as a Jet Engine Mechanic, you need a solid understanding of turbine engine theory, mechanical aptitude, and typically an FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certification or equivalent military training. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, engine testing equipment, and maintenance management systems is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and teamwork are vital soft skills for ensuring safety and efficiency. These skills and qualifications are critical for maintaining aircraft reliability and compliance with rigorous aviation safety standards.

What are some common challenges jet engine mechanics face in diagnosing and repairing engine issues?

Jet engine mechanics often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex mechanical and electronic systems, working with limited access to engine components in confined spaces, and keeping up with rapidly evolving technology. Diagnosing faults can require interpreting detailed technical manuals and using advanced diagnostic equipment. Additionally, mechanics must adhere to strict safety protocols and regulatory standards, which can add layers of complexity to repairs and maintenance tasks. Collaboration with engineers, inspectors, and other technicians is essential for effective problem-solving and ensuring aircraft safety.

What is the difference between Jet Engine Mechanic vs Aircraft Maintenance Technician?

AspectJet Engine MechanicAircraft Maintenance Technician
CertificationsFAA Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) license, specialized jet engine trainingFAA A&P license, general aircraft maintenance training
Work EnvironmentAircraft hangars, airports, maintenance facilities focusing on jet enginesAirports, maintenance shops, covering various aircraft systems
Industry UsagePrimarily in airline, military, and aerospace sectorsCommercial airlines, private aviation, military

Jet Engine Mechanics specialize in maintaining and repairing jet engines, requiring specific certifications and training. Aircraft Maintenance Technicians perform broader aircraft repairs, including systems beyond engines. Both roles are essential in aviation, but Jet Engine Mechanics focus specifically on engine performance and safety.

How much does a jet engine mechanic make?

Jet engine mechanics typically earn a median annual salary of around $70,000 to $80,000, with experienced technicians and those working in aerospace or military sectors earning higher. Salaries can vary based on location, certifications, and level of experience, and the job often requires specialized skills and tools.

Job Description:
Shield AI is seeking a Manager of Actuated Systems to lead an aircraft mechanical systems team for our groundbreaking jet-engine VTOL military UAV platform, X-BAT. You will manage a team of engineers designing and integrating flight- and mission-critical mechanisms such as doors, uplocks/downlocks, landing gear, folding/packaging mechanisms, flight-control actuation integration, and propulsion/nozzle actuation mechanisms. You will support your team in making key architectural decisions, by being a key technical resource, and by being a strong leader of great engineers.
Projects that you might work on:
X-BAT Doors, FCAS, Landing Gear, Up/Down Locks
What you'll do:
  • Lead and develop a team of high talent mechanical engineers, from new grad to Principal, focused on aircraft mechanisms and actuation systems (architecture, detailed design, analysis support, release, and sustaining).
  • Support your team as a technical resource for end-to-end design of mechanisms including (as applicable):
    • Doors & latching
    • Uplocks / Downlocks
    • Landing gear mechanisms
    • Actuation integration for flight controls
    • Nozzle / propulsion actuation mechanisms
    • Actuation, Hydraulics
  • Set the quality bar for mechanisms engineering: what "good" looks like in sizing, tolerances, margins, drawings/MBD, materials/process selection, and verification evidence.
  • Enable extreme ownership by ensuring engineers have clear goals, interfaces, resources, and decision rights
  • Drive effective cross-functional collaboration (systems, structures/loads, aero, propulsion, GNC, avionics, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, test, flight test) by fostering excelling communication across interfaces.
  • Coach and develop engineers through technical mentorship, career development, feedback, hiring, onboarding, and performance management.
  • Manage team workload across multiple builds and test campaigns; communicate risk, staffing needs, and schedule impacts with transparency.

Required qualifications:
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • 10+ years experience with aerospace mechanisms and actuated system design, build, integration, test and flight.
  • 2+ years leading teams or performing in a team leadership role.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams with high autonomy-setting direction, ensuring quality, and scaling output through people.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals: kinematics, statics/dynamics, fatigue/wear, tolerancing/GD&T, materials and finishes, lubrication/bearings, failure modes.
  • Experience shipping hardware through prototype build, test, iteration, and release, including supplier and manufacturing engagement.

Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience with environmental and operational robustness (vibration/shock, thermal extremes, contamination, corrosion, sand/dust, etc.).
  • Experience supporting ground test and flight test campaigns and mechanism failure investigations.
  • Familiarity with reliability and safety methods (DFMEA/FTA, fault containment, safe-state thinking) in collaboration with systems safety.
  • Experience building supplier relationships for machined parts, actuation systems, mechanisms assemblies, understanding of special processes and inspection/acceptance strategies.
