What is Java?

Java is a class-based object-oriented programming language that was developed in 1995 by Sun Microsystems and later bought by Oracle. Java was designed as a general language capable of programming software for commercial use. It is based on several previous languages such as Objective C, C++, and C#. Java can be used on most major operating systems, including Windows, Apple, and Linux distributions. There is also a Java virtual machine, which allows programmers and developers to work on different operating systems within a single platform.

What does a Java developer do?

A Java Developer is a software professional who specializes in designing, developing, and maintaining applications using the Java programming language. They often work on web, mobile, or enterprise applications, collaborating with other programmers, designers, and stakeholders to deliver functional software solutions. Their responsibilities include writing clean and efficient code, debugging issues, and ensuring applications are secure and scalable. Java Developers are also involved in testing, deploying, and updating software as technology and requirements evolve.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Java developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Java Developer, you need strong proficiency in Java programming, object-oriented design, and a solid understanding of software development principles, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with development frameworks like Spring or Hibernate, version control systems such as Git, and relevant certifications (e.g., Oracle Certified Java Programmer) is highly beneficial. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are important soft skills that distinguish top candidates in collaborative environments. These skills and qualifications are vital for building robust, efficient applications and contributing effectively to development teams.

How does a Java developer typically collaborate with other teams during a software project?

Java developers frequently work alongside front-end developers, QA specialists, and project managers to ensure smooth delivery of software projects. They participate in code reviews, daily stand-ups, and sprint planning meetings, sharing progress and addressing technical challenges collaboratively. Effective communication and coordination with other departments, such as DevOps for deployment or UX/UI teams for interface integration, are essential for delivering high-quality applications. This collaborative environment helps Java developers expand their technical knowledge and build strong professional relationships.

Job description

There is no relocation assistance. Only apply if you are within commuting distance or will self-relocate.

We're building a next-generation distributed operating system for a major Fortune 100 client. Our stack is Linux + Java + React. We've built extensive tooling, ported to half a dozen hardware platforms, and published an extensive SDK for external developers. We recently built a custom beverage dispenser from scratch – including a custom circuit board and 3D-printed parts – just to exercise our software stack.

What You'll Be Working On – You'll join our team as a Java engineer working directly with our chief architect to build and implement validation infrastructure for the Java layer of our platform. This means writing custom applications that exercise the core capabilities of a system we largely invented ourselves – from a distributed, immutable operating system, to WebSocket mesh networking, to a custom dependency injection framework with entirely new autowiring concepts.

This is a hands-on role that combines deep conceptual understanding with active development. Expect a desk full of Raspberry Pis, touchscreens, and custom hardware. There is no shortage of advanced technology to dig into.

Who Should Apply – We care more about your ability to learn and your genuine interest in the work than your resume. If you're good at understanding big concepts, connecting the dots, and filling in the gaps, you have the most important qualification we're looking for. That said, you should bring:

Requirements

Solid foundation in Java – you should be comfortable working in a mature, typed codebase and thinking carefully about design

Familiarity with dependency injection concepts, ideally through Spring or a similar framework, and comfort with annotation-driven development

Strong analytical thinking – the ability to understand a system, identify what needs to be validated, and design a methodical approach to doing so

Excellent note-taking and communication habits – we'll be teaching you a platform we built from scratch, and your ability to absorb, document, and ask good questions will directly determine your success

Curiosity about how things work at a systems level – our platform sits at the intersection of Java, embedded Linux, and custom hardware

Bonus points for experience with embedded systems, IoT, WebSocket networking, or hardware integration

Responsibilities

Design and implement Java applications that validate the core capabilities and functionality of our distributed OS platform

Work closely with the chief architect to understand platform internals, design considerations, and intended usage patterns

Develop validation plans for individual platform components, document your approach, and present for team review

Collaborate with the team to break designs down into development schedules and execute against them

Maintain clear documentation of validation coverage, findings, and decisions throughout the process

Contribute to the broader engineering team's understanding of platform behavior as validation surfaces new insights

The New Idea Company. Transforming ideas into successful enterprises through strategy, concepting,
and development.
