Job description

Job Description:
Voyant is a global enterprise SaaS company providing sophisticated financial planning software used by many of the world's leading banks, wealth management firms, and financial advisors. Our platform runs in AWS and supports multiple production environments across regions, with strong requirements around availability, security, and operational discipline.
Our Operations team is responsible for running production: deploying software, maintaining infrastructure, improving reliability, and continuously strengthening security across dozens of AWS environments.
We can only consider candidates for this position who are able to accommodate a FULLY IN OFFICE work schedule and are close to one of our Austin, TX office.
Why This Role Exists
We are intentionally hiring two junior AWS Operations Engineers at the same time. These two hires will work closely together day-to-day while being mentored by a small team of experienced senior engineers.
This role is designed for someone who:
  • Has a solid technical foundation
  • Enjoys writing code and automation, not just clicking in consoles
  • Is comfortable working with version-controlled codebases (Git)
  • Wants to learn how real production SaaS infrastructure works
  • Is excited by infrastructure as code, scripting, and operational problem-solving
  • Is looking to grow into a strong mid-level operations or platform engineer

You will not be thrown in alone - but you will be expected to learn quickly, ask good questions, and take increasing ownership over time.
What You'll Work On
You'll be part of the team responsible for operating Voyant's AWS environments, gradually taking on more responsibility as your skills grow.
Over time, you will:
  • Help operate and maintain production AWS environments used by real customers
  • Write and maintain automation and infrastructure code stored and reviewed in Git
  • Contribute to our Infrastructure as Code stack (primarily AWS CloudFormation)
  • Build and improve deployment and operational tooling using Jenkins, Python, and Bash
  • Work extensively in Linux environments running Java-based applications
  • Debug and improve automation when things don't behave as expected
  • Assist with maintenance activities such as AMI updates, DR testing, and environment upgrades
  • Collaborate with senior engineers to improve reliability, security, and scalability
  • Learn how to safely operate in security-sensitive, audited production environments

As you grow, you'll begin to:
  • Own small operational projects end-to-end
  • Write tooling that other engineers rely on
  • Troubleshoot real production issues using logs, metrics, and code
  • Participate in an on-call rotation (only after training and ramp-up)

Technologies You'll Learn and Use
You do not need to be an expert in all of these on day one. What matters most is being comfortable writing code, reading other people's code, and learning new systems.
Core technologies:
  • AWS (EC2, RDS, VPC, ALB, IAM, CloudFormation, S3, Lambda)
  • Linux (Amazon Linux, system-level troubleshooting)
  • Programming and scripting (Python is primary; Bash is also heavily used)
  • Infrastructure as Code (CloudFormation)
  • Configuration management (Ansible)
  • CI/CD tooling (Jenkins)
  • Git for version control and collaboration

Exposure to:
  • Monitoring and alerting tools (Datadog, CloudWatch)
  • Databases and caches (MySQL, Redis)
  • Networking fundamentals (HTTP, TLS, load balancing)
  • Web application and infrastructure security concepts
  • Terraform (early-stage, limited usage)

What We're Looking For
We're looking for engineers who are early in their careers but serious about building strong technical fundamentals - especially around coding, automation, and version-controlled workflows.
Required
  • 0-3 years of experience in a technical role (Ops, DevOps, SRE, Systems, or similar)
  • Comfortable writing real scripts or programs, not just small one-liners
  • Ability to reason about code, debug failures, and improve existing automation
  • Experience working in Linux environments
  • Familiarity with Git-based workflows (branching, pull requests, code reviews)
  • Some exposure to AWS (coursework, labs, internships, or real environments)
  • Strong curiosity and willingness to learn complex systems
  • Clear communication and comfort asking questions
  • A sense of responsibility when working on systems that affect customers

Nice to Have (Not Required)
  • Prior experience with Infrastructure as Code
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines
  • Coursework or hands-on work with distributed systems, networking, or security
  • Familiarity with Java-based web applications
  • Prior AWS certification

Learning, Certification, and Growth
We actively invest in the growth of our engineers.
  • We will support and fund your pursuit of the AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate certification
  • We provide access to AWS training and courses relevant to your role and interests
  • As your career develops, we support continued learning in areas that align with both your interests and the needs of the team

How You'll Be Supported
  • You'll join alongside another junior engineer in the same role
  • You'll be mentored by three experienced senior engineers
  • You'll receive structured onboarding with increasing responsibility
  • You'll get meaningful production experience - not shadow-only work
  • You'll be encouraged to grow technically in directions that interest you

Growth Path
This role is designed to grow into a mid-level AWS Operations / Platform Engineer position. Success in this role means you are increasingly trusted to:
  • Write and own automation that runs production
  • Improve reliability and operational safety through code
  • Take ownership of pieces of the infrastructure
  • Help onboard and mentor future junior engineers
  • Contribute to how Voyant runs production SaaS at scale
