What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Java Nodejs Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Java Nodejs Developer, you need strong programming skills in Java and JavaScript (Node.js), a solid understanding of backend frameworks, and experience with RESTful APIs, typically supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, build tools, containerization (Docker), and cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure is often required. These skills ensure the delivery of robust, scalable solutions and foster efficient development within dynamic technical teams.

How do Java Nodejs Developers typically collaborate with front-end teams in a full-stack development environment?

Java Nodejs Developers often work closely with front-end teams to ensure seamless integration between back-end services and user-facing applications. This collaboration usually involves regular meetings to discuss API requirements, troubleshoot integration issues, and align on project timelines. Developers may also participate in code reviews and joint debugging sessions to resolve cross-functional challenges quickly. Effective communication and a solid understanding of both server-side and client-side technologies are key to successful collaboration in these environments.

What is a Java Nodejs Developer?

A Java Nodejs Developer is a software engineer skilled in both Java and Node.js technologies. They are responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining applications using Java, a robust object-oriented language, and Node.js, a runtime environment for executing JavaScript on the server side. These developers often work on building scalable backend systems, integrating APIs, and ensuring smooth communication between different parts of a software solution. Their versatility allows them to handle a range of tasks across both Java-based and JavaScript-based platforms.

Job description

Principal Java Developer
Des Moines, Iowa (Hybrid)
Schedule: 4 Days Onsite | 1 Day Remote
A well-established financial institution is seeking a Principal Java Developer to provide hands-on technical leadership across a portfolio of enterprise applications. This is the highest-level individual-contributor engineering role on the application-development team and is ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex technical problems, mentoring developers, and influencing architecture without moving away from hands-on technology.
This is a direct-hire position located in downtown Des Moines, Iowa. The role follows a hybrid schedule requiring four days per week onsite and one remote day.
What You Will Do
  • Design and guide enterprise application solutions using Java and the Spring ecosystem.
  • Identify gaps in the current technical landscape and drive improvements.
  • Provide architecture and solution-design leadership across concurrent projects.
  • Mentor developers and help improve the team's overall technical maturity.
  • Review technical approaches, code, integration designs, and engineering standards.
  • Develop and support RESTful services, microservices, and data-driven applications.
  • Design secure authentication and authorization solutions.
  • Lead integrations involving APIs, message queues, and third-party applications.
  • Help teams balance immediate delivery needs with long-term architecture and maintainability.
  • Serve as a senior technical escalation point when the Application Development Manager is unavailable.
  • Support critical production applications and participate in an approximately one-week-in-ten on-call rotation.
  • Collaborate with business, product, architecture, security, vendor, and engineering stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or a related field with at least 10 years of relevant experience, or at least 12 years of equivalent professional experience.
  • Deep experience developing enterprise applications with Java 8 or later, preferably Java 11+.
  • Strong experience with the Spring ecosystem, RESTful web services, and JPA/Hibernate.
  • Architecture or solution-design experience, including authentication and authorization.
  • Experience with microservices and message-based application integration.
  • Demonstrated experience leading, mentoring, or guiding developers.
  • Strong understanding of object-oriented design, design patterns, application architecture, and the software-development lifecycle.
  • Experience with automated testing, builds, integration, and deployment.
  • Experience working with CI/CD and release-management practices, preferably using GitLab.
  • Experience with SQL and data-driven application design.
  • Ability to work independently, switch between priorities, and make sound technical decisions with limited supervision.
  • Willingness to work onsite four days per week and participate in on-call support.
Additional Technical Experience
Experience with several of the following is beneficial:
  • Java EE
  • Spring Boot
  • Hibernate
  • JUnit 5
  • Mockito
  • XML
  • SQL
  • JavaScript
  • Angular
  • TypeScript
  • Node.js
  • HTML and CSS
  • Bootstrap or Foundation
  • Agile, Scrum, and Waterfall delivery methods
Preferred Experience
  • Banking, financial services, insurance, investment management, or another regulated industry.
  • Implementation or integration of third-party enterprise applications.
  • Experience with financial platforms such as SimCorp, Principia, MarkitWire, or comparable systems.
  • Production support and after-hours incident resolution.
What Makes This Opportunity Distinctive
This role offers the opportunity to remain technically hands-on while operating as a trusted technical leader. You will have significant influence over solution quality, engineering standards, developer growth, and the future direction of the application landscape, without assuming direct people-management responsibilities.
