Job description

About the Role

We’re looking for a senior hands-on engineer to help banking teams fix and modernize critical applications.

You’ll work directly with development teams to solve problems such as:

  • Security vulnerabilities
  • Poor test coverage
  • Unreliable releases
  • Legacy Java applications
  • Production and stability issues

This is not a pure architecture or management role. About 70% of the job is hands-on coding and engineering.

What You’ll Do

  • Assess applications and identify technical problems.
  • Write and improve Java/JVM code.
  • Modernize legacy Java and Spring applications.
  • Build automated tests and improve test coverage.
  • Fix security vulnerabilities and outdated dependencies.
  • Improve CI/CD and release automation.
  • Containerize applications with Docker/OpenShift.
  • Improve application monitoring, logging, and production reliability.
  • Automate infrastructure and database changes.
  • Work directly with developers, architects, security, and other technical stakeholders.
  • Lead technical discussions and help engineering teams adopt better practices.
  • Take ownership of projects from assessment through production.

What We’re Looking For

Must Have

  • Strong, recent hands-on Java/JVM development experience.
  • Strong Spring/Spring Boot experience.
  • Experience with automated testing and CI/CD.
  • Experience fixing security vulnerabilities and dependency issues.
  • Experience with Linux, Git, and production troubleshooting.
  • Experience with Docker and/or OpenShift/Kubernetes.
  • Understanding of application reliability, monitoring, and distributed systems.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work directly with clients and engineering teams.

Nice to Have

  • WebSphere or WebLogic
  • TypeScript / Node.js / npm
  • Renovate or Dependabot
  • Liquibase or Flyway
  • Ansible
  • Kubernetes
  • Splunk, Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, Dynatrace, or similar
  • High-availability or disaster-recovery experience
  • Experience modernizing legacy enterprise applications

Who This Role Is For

This role is a strong fit for a senior software engineer who likes solving difficult problems hands-on.

You should enjoy getting into an existing application, figuring out what is wrong, writing the code to fix it, improving the engineering process, and seeing the solution through to production.

If your background is primarily architecture, project management, or people management without recent hands-on coding, this role is not the right fit.
