Senior Java Application Developer

Location: Texas Remote/Hybrid
Duration: 12 Months, with potential extensions

Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Senior Java Application Developer to provide application development and modernization services supporting business applications related to Parole and the Board of Pardons and Paroles. The developer will contribute to the modernization of the Offender Information Management System and work across the full software development lifecycle.

The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience with Java/J2EE development, SQL Server, XML, web technologies, and enterprise application frameworks, along with the ability to work on highly complex systems.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, test, debug, and maintain enterprise applications.
  • Develop and maintain Java-based applications using JSP, Servlets, EJB, and Struts2.
  • Analyze business and technical requirements and translate them into effective software solutions.
  • Develop and optimize SQL queries and work with Microsoft SQL Server databases.
  • Participate in application modernization and enhancement initiatives.
  • Troubleshoot application issues and identify root causes.
  • Perform unit testing, integration testing, debugging, and code reviews.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation and application documentation.
  • Collaborate with developers, business stakeholders, project managers, and other technical teams.
  • Use GitHub for source control and collaborative development.
  • Support application deployment, maintenance, and production issue resolution.
  • Contribute to technical design, architecture, and development standards.
  • Ensure applications meet security, accessibility, data quality, and organizational standards.

Required Skills
  • 8+ years of professional/consulting experience in application development.
  • Strong experience with Java, JSP, Servlets, and Enterprise Java Beans (EJB).
  • Experience with SQL Server and SQL development.
  • Experience with XML and HTML.
  • Experience with Struts2.
  • Experience using NetBeans IDE.
  • Experience with GitHub.
  • Experience with Azure Data Studio.
  • Strong understanding of enterprise application development and software design principles.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and work with complex integrated systems.

  • Experience working with Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) or other highly complex government systems.

Work Location

The position may be performed remotely, in-office, or in a combination of both. Occasional in-person meetings may be required in Austin or Huntsville, Texas.

Work Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM CT.

Candidates must be able to comply with applicable TDCJ security, confidentiality, cybersecurity, and data protection requirements. Work must be performed using TDCJ-provided hardware when required.
